Here’s an interesting one.

This roof has an extremely low slope. The metal did not have a drip edge underneath or any ice and water shield. So the osb deck was soaking up water like a sponge the last 20 years.

We first removed all the old metal and tar paper. Then replaced damaged sheathing and fascia boards. The next step was to install a low to zero slope Mule Hide product on the roof. This product is widely used for flat roofs, but instead of being black or white rubber it actually has an asphalt shingle like finish. We started with the approved underlayment in the entire surface, and followed that with the granulated cap sheet.

This product is self adhering and installs with a 75lb roller to ensure adhesion. Over time the sun and heat will weld these layers together. This forms a water tight bond that will be water proof even when ice and snow sit and push the water back up the roof.

Making sure you take the time to do each step properly is key to a long lasting roof!

Today we expanded! The farrier business has continued to grow and through it we had the opportunity to purchase a well established seamless gutter business.

Levi called needing some shoes for his draft horses, and after seeing the work decided Valley Forge might be the right fit for purchasing his gutter business. We share a desire to do good work and take care of our clients. His attention to detail created a successful business installing gutters and we look to carry it on with that same attention to the details. We will continue in the farrier business the same as usual. We are simply adding to our services and going into business for ourselves full time.

So thankful to the Lord for bringing us the opportunity to be fully self employed. Thankful to Levi and Chimerie for trusting us with their business. And thankful to all our clients and customers who continue to support us, your endorsements are our only advertisement!

Sometimes 6 weeks is too long. A little before and after on this gelding that’s been on a 6 week schedule all summer. It’s important to keep a tight schedule with your horses. That needs to be whatever the hoof says it is. 6 weeks is not a magic number, it’s just an average. If your horse grows fast then we increase the frequency, if he grows slow we can spread it out. But remember that trims are for the overall health of the horse, not just to keep feet looking pretty.

A new horse to work on. This guy wore a size 3 so I decided to use quarter clips. When fit right these take a lot of shear pressure off the nails and help the shoe stay locked in place. Also, they just look good.

A case of laminitis in one of my new client horses. I suspected founder by the unnatural dish in the toe and these radiographs confirmed my suspicion. The horse was also very uncomfortable and it’s easy to see why. Her coffin bone (last one on the bottom) is rotated downward causing her to put pressure on the tip of the bone. In this picture she is in what we call the chronic phase. Acute phase = pain and hoof wall separation right now, Chronic phase = ongoing long term problem, no immediate pain or hoof wall separation. There are many different methods to address chronic laminitis, and there are many theories as to what causes it. The best treatment is prevention but if you find yourself in this position, the farrier and vet will come up with a treatment plan that can save the life of your horse. As a horse owner, your job is to be educated and knowledgeable of laminitis and how to spot it, and to be on a regular schedule with your farrier to keep an eye on your horses feet.
