Intern Spotlight!! Dr. India Burdon-Dasbach

Originally from New York, she attended Dartmouth for medical school and was drawn to the University of Utah for the early operative experience, the Center for Global Surgery, access to the outdoors, and most importantly the coolest residents with an amazing and supportive culture!

If you she had to choose between being an astronaut or whale, she says “Whale so I could travel the world, speak whale, and meet whale friends”

India brings great energy to the team every single day!

Intern Spotlight: Annie Long, MD

Dr. Long hails from from Seattle, WA and University of Washington School of Medicine. When asked “Why Utah?” She refers to this program as “The best of all worlds: I’m able to be competitive for fellowship while gaining extensive operative experience, train alongside people I’d genuinely want to be friends with outside of medicine, and pursue my outdoor passions right in my backyard. All of these photos were taken during residency so far!”

Would you rather be an astronaut or a whale? “Whale without a doubt, I get to sing with my friends and eat shrimp? Kick rocks, astronauts.”

We’re so lucky to have you, and our anesthesiology colleagues are lucky to have Dr. Hart!

Intern Spotlight: Joey Maestas MD

Originally from Parker, Colorado, Dr Maestas attended medical school at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He was initially drawn to the University of Utah for the early operative experience and was impressed by how graduates thrive in both competitive fellowships and rural surgery, but he ultimately came here for the people: a close-knit, hardworking, and genuinely supportive group that who are the heart of the program.

Astronaut or whale? Astronaut, without hesitation, because few things could be more humbling or transformative than seeing Earth as a marble. As astronaut Karen Nyberg put it, “If I could get every Earthling to do one circle of the Earth, I think things would run a little differently.”

Dr. Marshall Wallace arguably has the strongest selfie game in the program, but his accomplishments go beyond the front-facing camera! Dr. Wallace was awarded the American College of Surgeons Resident Research scholarship to help fund his research for his two years with the Pediatric Surgery Group. The project will focus on implementation science and a multi-center implementation of post-trauma mental health screening in injured children, through the Utah Pediatric Trauma Network. This work will scale up an existing screening and interventional protocol at Primary Children’s Hospital into a multi-center unified post-trauma screening and referral network to support pediatric trauma victims across the State of Utah.

Congratulations, and keep up the outstanding work Marshall!

Intern Spotlight: Dr. Evan Watkins ✨

Hailing from Angola, Indiana, Evan came to Utah after completing medical school at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Drawn in by the U’s supportive resident culture, graduates who pursue both out of residency private practice and fellowship-bound paths, and guaranteed research time, the program felt like the right fit. Outside the hospital, Utah’s unbeatable access to the outdoors sealed the deal.

Astronaut or whale? Whale, no contest—after working in commercial fishing and spotting humpback and orca whales in the Gulf of Alaska, how could you choose anything else?

Spring has sprung here in Salt Lake City! Whether you’re a resident-parent hosting an Easter egg hunt for all the little ones, a research resident cheering on your neighbors at the “pond skim” (a favorite of many Utah Ski Resorts for closing weekend), or a little cat excited to snooze in the sun for the first time all winter, there was something to celebrate for everyone! We’re always sad to see ski season go, but summer brings even more Utah adventures around the corner.
