Because of their proximity to delicate structures, skull base tumors can be tricky to remove—a single misstep could result in facial paralysis or another life-changing issue.

Luckily for Mischelle Colby, when she began experiencing migraines and hearing loss from vestibular schwannoma, she was introduced to our incredible multi-disciplinary skull base team, including neurosurgeon William Couldwell, MD, PhD, and neurotologist Neil Patel, MD.

With their help, Mischelle is getting her life and her health back. She told Dr. Patel, “That was just a single day of your life, just one surgery among thousands in your career. But for me, that one day affects every day for the rest of my life. Thank you for taking the time to do your very best for me on that day.”

We’re welcoming the Symani Surgical System for robotic microsurgery to our team, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Our surgeons control every move the robotic system makes, combining their years of experience with the tremor-reducing and motion-scaling precision of the instruments.

We’ll bring you along as we gear up for the first robotic surgery with the new system!

We have an incredible endoscopic spine program, led by Mark Mahan, MD! Endoscopic spine surgery is a quick and minimally invasive treatment option for back pain.

More than 90% of patients experience lower pain levels and better mobility immediately after surgery!

Giving Days are almost over, and we want to introduce one last resident to you, Allison Liang, MD!

"Hey I’m Allison, currently a 4th year resident. I am working in Dr. Karol Budohoski’s lab focused on understanding the role of endothelial cell dysfunction for brain aneurysms. Our lab specializes in endovascular coil biopsies of aneurysms, single-cell RNA sequencing of endothelial cells, and developing a cell culture model of aneurysmal endothelial cells. The Apfelbaum Grant Fund has supported my work this year by giving me the resources to continue our gene sequencing of aneurysms and testing novel protocols for building a working cell culture model of brain aneurysms."

On day 2 of giving, meet PGY-4 resident Forrest Hamrick, MD. Dr. Hamrick is using his research year to study a variety of topics, including optimizing instrumentation to manage adjacent segment disease after spine surgery, generating virtual myelograms from non-contrast CT scans to evaluate the spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid space, and assessing the efficacy of focused ultrasound for third ventriculostomy to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid in sheep models.

It's officially day 1 of giving, so meet PGY-4 resident David Botros, MD (pictured second from the left)!

"During my research year, I’ve taken an interest in many aspects of functional neurosurgery. From tumor-related epilepsy, to neuromodulation, and movement disorders, the field is filled with research opportunities. I’m particularly focused on MRI-guided focused ultrasound, elucidating biological mechanisms of its therapeutic benefits as well as optimizing patient outcomes. With Dr. Rahimpour’s leadership, the Apfelbaum fund opened the door to understanding the impact of focused ultrasound on patients with Parkinson’s disease, using serum samples collected before, during, and after the procedure. We look forward to building on these findings to ultimately gather external funding. During this year, I've also gotten to be part of Dr. Rahimpour's team that performed the first stem cell therapy implantation for epilepsy as part of an international effort!"
