I’m grateful for C-sections! Doulas can get mislabeled as “anti-C-section”, so I’m going on the record, I’m so grateful for them! I have 5 nieces and nephews of my own who were born via C-section. 2 were emergency, 2 were planned, and 1 was unplanned. And guess what! Each one of them came *exactly* the way they were meant to.
It is important to understand that C-sections are performed 3x more now than they were 30 years ago (WHO, 2021).
That huge spike isn’t because in one generation our bodies are becoming less capable of delivering babies vaginally, it’s because C-sections are becoming a more common protocol in hospitals for slow progressing labor. Families are feeling more rushed to move to C-sections when labor is slow, and feeling rushed makes it harder to feel empowered.
So, I will often list lower rates of C-sections as a benefit of a doula. That isn’t meant to label C-sections as “bad” (again, I’m grateful for them!). It’s simply meant to show that doulas can help you not feel rushed to move to a C-section if that’s something you really don’t want.
In the end, it is YOUR birth and you should feel like you’re a part of every decision. As your doula, I help you stay engaged in the decision-making process, regardless of how you are delivering. ☀︎
