Happy Friday!

Who struggles with motivation? Well, I get asked about this a lot. One of the things that I hear frequently, or is at least strongly implied, is a thing called Laziness… β€œI’m just too lazy…” I don’t believe anyone is lazy. Just that we have impotent goals. Everyone is motivated to do what is important to them. If you want to know what is important to someone, just look at what they are doing… That’s what they want to do, or they wouldn’t be doing it. So, then, the question is not one of motivation, but rather what is the disconnect between what I say I want and what I am demonstrating I want (what I’m actually doing). Watch yourself for an entire day. Take note of what you do each moment. Is this activity moving you closer to what you say you want, or farther away? In what way is this activity connected to what you want? In what way is it not connected to what you want? One of the really cool byproducts of doing this kind of work or evaluation of yourself is a natural reevaluation of your stated goals or desires. Do you really want that thing, or do you just think you are supposed to want it? Remember, it’s perfectly ok to not want to set the world on fire, or be the next big thing, or be super rich, etc., etc. What do you really want? Really? Are you sure? Once you’ve decided that, break it down into the smallest, easiest-to-achieve chunks you can, and start working toward that. Motivation is automatic when you know what you really want. There is no β€˜learning’ motivation!

Happy Friday!

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about overwhelm. Is this something that you deal with? Overwhelm typically occurs when we try to do everything at once; which we can’t do anyway, but sometimes we try to. This happens for both those who are list makers and those who are not, but it slightly different ways. Have you ever planned your day so exactingly, then gotten off to a late start? This tends to make us want to do a whole bunch of things at once to try to catch up, which, of course, we can’t do. For others, those who are not list makers, overwhelm can be the result of the jumble of things that we know we need to get done, but are not really sure which are the priorities. Either way, the quickest and simplest way to get out of overwhelm is to just pick one thing, just one thing – it doesn’t even have to be the top priority – just pick one thing and do that. This will allow you to focus on one thing and not everything (which, again, is where overwhelm lives). Just do something; and doing something always leads to doing something… And you’re off!

Happy Friday!

Do you use to-do lists? Some love them, some hate them. But, it is important to be organized. I have known some who take it so far that they have lists of lists… That may be a little extreme for most folks. To-do lists can be great; but, they can also be overwhelming. I think it works best if you find a way to priorities tasks such that you have a list of what you can, and will, accomplish that day. This can be done by creating symbols that you mark next to items on your list, or it can be done by keeping a β€˜master’ to-do list and a β€˜Today’ to-do list. Still, some of my clients don’t like to-do lists at all. For them, the thing that works better is holding their most important priority in mind, regardless of the current task. This reminds them to always get back to the thing that is most important to them; even if they can only accomplish a small part of it that day. So, what do you prefer?
