Newly discovered protein target could help protect neurons from death in ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s

In neurodegenerative diseases, neurons can activate a shutdown process known as apoptosis.

A recent study found that reducing levels of the STAUFEN-1 protein may help block this process and protect neurons.
Lead study author Mandi Gandelman, MSci, PhD, at the University of Utah’s Pulst-Scoles Lab, emphasizes the urgency of understanding that process, especially since over 90% of neurodegenerative diseases are not inherited.
The Pulst-Scoles Lab’s findings may help inform future treatments for ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease.

A $1 million gift to advance ALS research. Introducing the Dr. John P. Punke Endowed Chair, with Daniel R. Scoles, PhD, named the inaugural chair. A full circle moment for both individuals.

After an ALS diagnosis linked to the ATXN2 gene, Dr. Punke searched for leading researchers and found them at the Pulst-Scoles Lab at the University of Utah. He enrolled in a clinical trial for a gene therapy that Scoles co-developed. A shared ALS journey of two people, one as a patient and the other as a researcher.
Dr. Punke’s generous act of selflessness reflects his deep dedication to advancing ALS research and improving the lives of others.
