"Join us for a one-day summit designed to help Utahns take a more active role in shaping our democracy. This event will ground you in the current state of voting rights in Utah and show you how every eligible voter can directly influence the systems that impact our lives. That's what we mean by participatory democracy—communities where everyone has the power, tools, and access to take part.

Hear from community partners and policy experts about the state of voting rights, election security, and the future of vote-by-mail and voter ID in Utah.

Develop practical skills for discussing voting rights with confidence, advocating with lawmakers, and taking meaningful action—from voter mobilization to serving as a poll worker or watcher. "

January 4th is World Braille Day!

According to the United Nations, Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.

-Widening doorways for use by someone in a wheelchair.
-Installing curb cuts in front of an accessible parking space.

Individuals with disabilities can request accommodations and modifications in housing like changes to pet policies and installing grab bars.

"The Utah Disability Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah say that the state established a two-tier guardianship system under legislation passed earlier this year that strips some citizens of certain legal protections.

Those protections include the right to an attorney, the right to a trial and the right to object to a guardianship, the plaintiffs write in their complaint. Opponents of the bill argue it also include sweeping powers for guardians to restrict an individual’s personal relationships, diet and media consumption."

Disability rights groups argue that a new guardianship law creates a two-tier system that strips people with intellectual disabilities of basic legal protections.

"Disability Law Center says the guardianship system implemented in July—a separate system from regular guardianships—allows state residents with significant intellectual disabilities to be “funneled in many cases into a system where the opportunity to mount a defense to a guardianship petition all but vanishes.”

A Utah disability rights group is continuing its fight against a state guardianship law designed for people with “severe” mental disabilities that the group says strips them of legal rights and protections.
