First Step House

First Step House
A SLC-based behavioral health treatment and housing provider

The mission of First Step House is to help people build lives of meaning, purpose, and recovery. Founded in 1958, First Step House has evolved into a co-occurring capable, behavioral health treatment and housing provider. First Step House is accredited by the Joint Commission, the leading healthcare accreditation entity in the U.S., for our continuous compliance with performance standards and commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. We have been a consistent leader in the Salt Lake metro area delivering evidence-based interventions and achieving positive outcomes for individuals, Veterans, and families who struggle with high severity substance use disorders, histories of homelessness, mental health conditions, justice system involvement, and primary health concerns. We operate two residential treatment facilities, two outpatient treatment centers, and six transitional housing facilities in Salt Lake County, Utah. We are currently in the process of building two permanent supportive housing facilities for individuals with histories of homelessness, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders. The scope of services we offer include substance use disorder and mental health assessment, residential and outpatient treatment, recovery residence services, housing, case management, employment support, primary health care, peer support services, and long-term recovery management. Through our programs, we serve over 1,000 individuals per year- many of who arrive at our doorstep with very little resources, lack of family support, and numerous barriers to overcome.

When you feel good, you look good – and when you look good, you feel good. ✂️✨

A huge thank you to JJ and his awesome team at Shades of Fades Barbershop and Marisol and her amazing team at The Hair Temple for providing haircuts to our permanent supportive housing residents last week!

For many of our residents, professional haircuts aren't always accessible. When volunteers like these don't come in, our residents often go months without this basic service that so many of us take for granted. But today? Fresh cuts and renewed confidence all around.

Thank you for helping our community members feel their best! 💙

"For 55 years, we've been contributing to making lives better"

This week we're launching an exciting celebration – 55 Years in Fairpark! First Step House has been serving Utahns since 1958. In 1970, our Fairpark location opened in what was once a LDS chapel at 411 N. Grant Street. As our oldest present-day location, Fairpark has spent over five decades helping people rebuild their lives by providing comprehensive treatment and housing, addressing the intersecting challenges of addiction, homelessness, and health issues.

Meet Cheryl, Program Manager at our Fairpark Residential Treatment location. What started as an internship became a 17-year career when she "fell in love with the program." Her insights into our journey and impact are touching.

"First Step represents so many things for so many people because we're rebuilding lives."

We're sharing 55 Years in Fairpark stories all week – stay tuned for more!

What does Recovery Month look like? It looks like making new friends over root beer floats and community coming together. 🌟

Our friends from Program of Addiction Research, Clinical Care, Knowledge, and Advocacy brought the sweetest celebration to our REACH residential treatment facility in Millcreek. One client shared how much it meant to him to have someone come in and do something special for the program, telling us, "I haven't had a root beer float in 20 years!"

Thank you, volunteers, for reminding us that recovery is filled with simple moments of connection and care.

Recently, students from the The University of Utah spent their Saturday morning with us at Valor House as part of Bennion Center's Legacy of Lowell community service event. Together, they helped paint rooms and create a welcoming space for the veterans we serve in transitional housing.

Their time and effort didn’t go unnoticed. One resident shared, "It's so nice to see people coming to volunteer and help us."

We’re grateful for these students' commitment to giving back. Thank you for showing up, lending a hand, and making an impact!

"People who talk about su***de don't actually do it."

💙 This month is National Su***de Prevention Month, and we want to address this harmful myth.

This couldn't be further from the truth. When someone talks about su***de, they're often reaching out for help in the only way they know how. It's a sign that they're struggling, not that they're seeking attention.

If someone in your life mentions su***de, even casually, take it seriously. Listen without judgment. Ask direct questions like "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" Your willingness to have that conversation could save a life.

Remember: It's okay to not be okay. Help is available, and healing is possible.

Self care isn't selfish, it's survival. It's recovery. It's resilience.

For those in recovery, self care looks like setting boundaries, attending support meetings, taking prescribed medications, getting enough sleep, and saying no to situations that threaten your peace.

Self care is recognizing your triggers and having a plan. It's calling your sponsor when you're struggling. It's choosing the harder path because it's the healthier one.

Recovery teaches us that we can't pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn't just good for you, it's good for everyone who loves you and depends on you.

Today and every day, prioritize yourself. You're worth it.
