Anthology Counseling

Hi there! Whitney Barrell Counseling is now Anthology Counseling. Because, it's not just me anymore! Vanessa, Kara, M'Recia and Annie are all integral parts of this team.

We choose Anthology Counseling because anthology means: a collection of poems, pieces of writings or songs. Doesn't that also sounds like a good way to describe a person? Or a life? Or an experience? We thought so.

Aside from a new website, everything else remains the same. Same location, same therapists, same high quality mental health care nestled into our Sugar House neighborhood. I'll post a few updates about each therapist, we've been training and learning and surviving!

For more details, check out our new website. The intention was for it to feel part art, part useful information and no part inspirational posters you saw in your high school PE's teachers classroom.

Two items of good news -

1. We are holding a virtual Relational Trauma support group on Tuesday nights.

You may think to yourself - 'I'm not really a support group kind of person."

I've said those same words, and I've also found incredible support and understand when in a safe space with strangers who share a similar experience. So, join us.

6 weeks for $75 and while therapists aren't known for their math skills, that rate is undoubtedly less than an typical 1 hour therapy session.

Join us for an intensive one-day parenting group.

We will utilize the works of Dr. Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson to teach you how to create secure attachments with your children and how to respond to their behavior in a connected way. Group content will focus on the 4 S's - seen, safe, soothed, secure. This content will be tailored for parents of children ages 4-12. Skilled therapists who specialize in parent coaching and child development will provide framework, as well as answer questions and provide concrete examples of practices you can put into place that afternoon.

We started a "lobby art installation" and look what we co-created. I wrote out a few prompts and clients filled in the blanks. It turned out to be a beautiful snapshot of hopes, dreams, worries and just plain humanity. I love this work.

I spoke with Minna Dubin, a writer best known for her insights on "mom rage" and motherhood. We spoke about a topic near and dear to my heart - infertility it's impact on friendships. Years back when my life was complicated by infertility and an unrelenting desire to be a parent, it was hard to be in friendships. Infertility is mysterious and confusing to those who don't experience it and I know many of my friends/family felt like walking on eggshells around me. I was just so darn sad.

Minna lays out beautiful interactions among women seeking to find depth and support in one another while on opposite sides of the proverbial fence.

GOOD NEWS!

We've got another talented therapist on board. M'Recia is currently earning her Master's degree on Social Work and is available to see clients in our practice for a discounted rate.

M'Recia has already done more reading about attachment/interpersonal neurobiology, relationships, child development than most clinicians her senior. She's also no stranger to grief and loss in her own life. M'Recia brings safety, perspective and clinical expertise to her sessions.

Her schedule is almost full, but she has a few openings Thursday mornings.
