Recently, there was a surprising series published in a well respected journal, The Lancet, claiming that most women don’t need hormone replacement to navigate menopause. I have seen this news (we all have!) for a long time. ⁣
⁣
But this was surprising to me because over the past two years since The Menopause Society updated their position statement on the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT, now also MRT— menopausal replacement therapy), and an important article in the New York Times, there has been a rising understanding, acceptance, and use of MRT (Yeah! We’ve been waiting for this, and knew it HAD to happen sometime….)⁣

A response to this series, linked here and written by is signed by over 250 doctors, including me. ✍️⁣
⁣
Let me first explain why I would sign a response in favor of “over-medicalization” for menopause. This term may be misunderstood by my audience. Sometimes we think of medicine as something we want to look for an alternative to. Right? Well, the truth is that many hormones are prescriptions (i.e. “medicalized” doctor stuff that we are highly trained in) and that for menopause, based on tons of solid scientific evidence, HRT is one of the most important interventions for overall health, in addition to foundational care (of course!) We know that as a result of the misinterpretation of the WHI 20 years ago that women (& many doctors too!) have been misinformed about HRT and its safety. Not replacing lost hormones that are natural to your body for optimal health increases all-cause mortality! If you’re my patient, you know this. If you’re not, find a menopause specialist who can help! ✌️🩺⚕️🥰⁣
