I've had many people ask me what, exactly, craniosacral therapy is, and what it's used for. I thought I'd answer that here as more people would be interested in that answer than those who actually asked.
Craniosacral therapy or CST is a modality based in science. Although it is very energetic, and can seem as "woo woo" as reiki, CST is focused on encouraging more fluidity and flexibility in the cerebral spinal fluid and dura of the spinal column and cranium (skull). So, how does CST help? Well, the analogy of a crimped hose is pretty accurate, except that when we're talking about the spinal column, we're also taking into consideration the nerves and other adjacent structures. As an illustration, let's say a woman has recently experienced a car accident. It was minor; just a low-impact hit from behind. It was unexpected though, and her body is thrown forward to hit the steering wheel and from side-to-side; not only hitting the door slightly, but also pulling the seatbelt more tightly across her left shoulder, right hip, and abdomen. Immediately after, she doesn't feel any pain, but days later, has discomfort in that shoulder, hip, neck, and her mid- and lower-back. She receives massage, but still has discomfort. CST can help "unwind" the injury (yes, the body does remember, even after years!), and encourages not only better lymphatic flow in the body and areas of stress, but also increases the flow of cerebral spinal fluid up the dura (inside the spinal column), unblocking areas that have been 'twisted'. As with most things (as in, a clogged drain or blocked river) flow helps and should always be encouraged for optimum health. Likewise, any cranial injuries can cause constriction in the skull, often resulting in headaches, visual and hearing issues. The proper, unrestricted flow of cerebral spinal fluid through the skull without constriction is ideal. This explanation only skims the surface of all the aspects of CST, but I hope it encourages more exploration. I love the fact that no practitioner is forcing the body to make changes. A Craniosacral therapist follows the body's natural knowledge of health and encourages the body in making changes that will achieve that. ;-)
