If your baby or toddler needs to be rocked or fed to sleep, you are not alone!

Did you know that falling asleep without help is a learned skill?

Babies are capable of learning this skill once they are around 4 months old.

What does having independent sleep skills look like?

Newborns don’t have a sleep schedule. They basically eat and sleep on demand.

At this age, we are paying attention to their WAKE WINDOWS. This is the time from when they wake up, til the time they fall asleep again.

They have short wake windows. 45-90 minutes through the day. (Wake windows get longer throughout the day). Then they may sleep for 30 minutes-3 hours at a time.

Pay attention to their sleepy cues (staring off, subtle yawn, deep sigh, reddish tint on eyelids) to help prevent overtiredness. An overtired baby is hard to get to sleep. If they are getting close to the end of a wake window and showing sleepy cues, get them to sleep right away.

If you need help figuring out your newborn’s sleep, or have other questions about them, DM me, or visit the website to book a 30-minute consult for one-on-one help.

It can be tricky to figure out a sleep schedule for a 3-month old. They may have short naps, and lots of night wakings.

For the most part, they are still eating and sleeping on demand, with a loose schedule.

The most important thing to watch during this time, and the thing that you can control as they are getting close to learning independent sleep skills at 4 months, is their WAKE WINDOWS. This is the time from when they wake up, til the time they fall asleep again.

They have short wake windows. 2 hours at the most, before bed, but closer to 60-90 minutes through the day. (Wake windows get longer throughout the day).

Every baby has different sleep needs, so I included a few different “schedules” to help give you an idea of how much sleep your baby may need, and how long they may be awake between naps and bedtime. Some babies have lower sleep needs, and some have higher sleep needs. Either is fine, it’s just helpful to know what to expect.

A sleep schedule that works for you and your baby, is the best sleep schedule.

At 6-months old, there may be a sleep regression as baby is learning new skills, or teething. Offer extra support when needed, stay consistent with the schedule, and things should return to normal once the regression has passed…often after 2 weeks.

Their wake windows may be 2 hours between naps, and 2.5 hours before bed.
They typically get 3.5-4.5 hours of daytime sleep, and 11-12 hours of nighttime sleep.

These are the current recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics for safe infant sleep.

The leading cause of injury death in infancy, is Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), which includes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Following these safe sleep recommendations can prevent many of these fatalities.

Use this information for yourself, or use it to educate others that may need it.

I’d love for you sleep soundly, knowing your baby is sleeping safely.

Let me know if you have questions.
