Do you know the difference between Sleepy Cues and Tired Signals?

🄱 Sleepy cues are the signs given to indicate that baby is ready to go to sleep. The quicker you get baby to bed after the sleepy cues start, the more peaceful it will be.

😭 Tired cues are saying ā€œget me to bed ASAPā€, and are the signs that baby is getting dangerously close to being overtired, or that they already are. This makes it more difficult to get them to sleep.

🄱 Sleepy cues:
-Eyes staring off into the distance
-Calm, peaceful demeanor
-Subtle yawning
-Reddish color in eyebrows and eyelids

😭 Tired signals:
-Fussing
-Rubbing eyes
-Tugging on ears
-Avoiding eye contact
-Arching back
-Getting rigid
-Jerky, flailing arms or legs

🧐It may be hard to catch those sleepy cues at first, and you may think your baby is just bored, so you try to entertain them more. Instead, take this as a sign that baby is ready for sleep, and start getting them ready for a nap or bed. They will most likely fall asleep quickly.

šŸ˜“If you miss these sleepy cues and get to point of tired signals and they aren’t falling asleep, do whatever you need to do to help them get to sleep. (Swaddle, pacifier, white noise, rocking, bouncing, dark room)
This happens sometimes…because life happens! It’s okay!

Let’s help your baby/toddler learn independent sleep skills!
It’s like learning any independent skill in life, such as teaching a toddler to use a spoon/fork.

šŸ„„Getting to the point of using utensils might start with them holding their bottle, then being spoon-fed by someone else, then them using their fingers to feed themself pieces of food, and eventually gets to them feeding themself with a spoon and/or fork.
You start with what skills they have, and slowly build on them until they are able to do it independently.

šŸ’¤ Remember, sleep learning is something you are doing WITH your baby. It’s the first time for each of you, so you are learning together. Even if you have other children, there’s not a ā€œone size fits allā€ for this. Every baby is different and has different needs. And that’s okay! I’m here to help you figure out what your baby/toddler needs to develop those independent sleep skills.

If you need more help with this, book a consult on the website. www.littlesleeplearners.com

If your baby or toddler needs to be rocked or fed to sleep, you are not alone!

Did you know that falling asleep without help is a learned skill?

Babies are capable of learning this skill once they are around 4 months old.

Newborns don’t have a sleep schedule. They basically eat and sleep on demand.

At this age, we are paying attention to their WAKE WINDOWS. This is the time from when they wake up, til the time they fall asleep again.

They have short wake windows. 45-90 minutes through the day. (Wake windows get longer throughout the day). Then they may sleep for 30 minutes-3 hours at a time.

Pay attention to their sleepy cues (staring off, subtle yawn, deep sigh, reddish tint on eyelids) to help prevent overtiredness. An overtired baby is hard to get to sleep. If they are getting close to the end of a wake window and showing sleepy cues, get them to sleep right away.

If you need help figuring out your newborn’s sleep, or have other questions about them, DM me, or visit the website to book a 30-minute consult for one-on-one help.

It can be tricky to figure out a sleep schedule for a 3-month old. They may have short naps, and lots of night wakings.

For the most part, they are still eating and sleeping on demand, with a loose schedule.

The most important thing to watch during this time, and the thing that you can control as they are getting close to learning independent sleep skills at 4 months, is their WAKE WINDOWS. This is the time from when they wake up, til the time they fall asleep again.

They have short wake windows. 2 hours at the most, before bed, but closer to 60-90 minutes through the day. (Wake windows get longer throughout the day).

Every baby has different sleep needs, so I included a few different ā€œschedulesā€ to help give you an idea of how much sleep your baby may need, and how long they may be awake between naps and bedtime. Some babies have lower sleep needs, and some have higher sleep needs. Either is fine, it’s just helpful to know what to expect.
