It can be tricky to figure out a sleep schedule for a 3-month old. They may have short naps, and lots of night wakings.
For the most part, they are still eating and sleeping on demand, with a loose schedule.
The most important thing to watch during this time, and the thing that you can control as they are getting close to learning independent sleep skills at 4 months, is their WAKE WINDOWS. This is the time from when they wake up, til the time they fall asleep again.
They have short wake windows. 2 hours at the most, before bed, but closer to 60-90 minutes through the day. (Wake windows get longer throughout the day).
Pay attention to their sleepy cues (staring off, subtle yawn, deep sigh, reddish tint on eyelids) to help prevent overtiredness. An overtired baby is hard to get to sleep. If they are getting close to the end of a wake window and showing sleepy cues, get them to sleep right away.
Every baby has different sleep needs, so I included a few different “schedules” to help give you an idea of how much sleep your baby may need, and how long they may be awake between naps and bedtime. Some babies have lower sleep needs, and some have higher sleep needs. Either is fine, it’s just helpful to know what to expect.
