For many, Halloween is fun and exciting—but for those managing mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, or PTSD, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Crowds, loud noises, and triggering costumes can all increase stress.
Here’s how you can make Halloween more manageable this year:
It’s okay if you don’t feel up for festivities. Create a cozy night in, maybe with a Halloween movie, or ask a few close friends to join you for a quieter celebration.
If crowds, costumes, or noises feel overwhelming, practice grounding techniques like deep breathing or relaxation ahead of time. You can also opt for smaller, familiar settings or alternative celebrations.
Certain costumes can perpetuate harmful stereotypes about mental illness. If this is a concern, have an honest conversation with loved ones about avoiding those themes.
Every year is different. If last year’s celebrations didn’t feel right, adjust and do what feels safe for your mental well-being.
No matter how you celebrate—or choose not to—your mental health comes first.
