This might seem like a silly question, but I want you to take a moment and think about it.

If you’ve struggled to lose weight, with depression or anxiety, or a challenging health diagnosis and you’ve tried all the diets, read the books, listened to the podcasts, taken the pills, all the things, and you’re still struggling, it’s easy to feel hopeless and helpless and like you never will feel better.

Here’s the thing about getting better and feeling better, it’s going to look a little big differently for everyone. We all came to our current situation in a unique way and that means what it will take to get better will be unique to you.

But there are some hard and fast rules that seem to work for everyone, and that is because they’re things that our body needs in order to heal and to thrive.

Here are just a few things you can try that might get you a little bit of relief.

Regulate your circadian rhythm:

- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day

- Get outside first thing the morning for sunshine on your face and in your eyes

- Watch the sunset

- Turn off blue lights or wear blue light blocking glasses for at least 2 hours before you go to bed

Focus on eating a whole food diet:

- Center all your meals around protein, try and get at least 30 grams per meal

- Include healthy fats with your meals, things like avocado, olives, nuts, seeds, and coconut

- Eat fiber rich vegetables, these are typically the ones that grow above ground

- Reduce the amount of grains, high starch, ultra processed, and sugary foods you have each day

Move your body

- Get 3-4 workouts each week that includes resistance training

- Try and get 8-10k steps per day

- If you have a desk job, make it a goal to stand up and move around every hour

If you implement some of these tried and true practices into your daily life, you will likely start to enjoy some small wins and those small wins will propel you to keep going.

A New Year is the perfect time to make positive changes to your diet to improve your overall health.

Here on social media you will see people promoting toxic restrictive diet-y kind of changes like low-fat, low-calories, and hours upon hours in the gym.

On the flipside you’re going to see the anti-diet culture that seems to want us to accept our current situation as fine/healthy, and any kind of restriction as bad.

Don’t buy into either of these! Getting healthy by making positive changes to your diet is the ultimate form of self-care and self-love!

You deserve to feel and look your very best, and that means properly fueling your body in a way that it can take the very best care of you!

Two things you can do that will immediately begin to improve your health are to start removing some of the processed food you’re currently eating, and instead replace it with whole food fruits, veggies, and protein.

The other is to add more animal products to your diet. These two things together will do absolute wonders for how you feel and how you look. And, I have a feeling you’re going to be pleasantly surprised at how quickly your body will reward you!

Poor metabolic health leaves us susceptible to many chronic health conditions such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, PCOS, NAFLD, dementia, Alzheimer's, and even certain types of cancer.

I grew up in the era of “low fat” and “fat free” everything! Fat was the enemy to be avoided at all cost. So much of the food at the grocery store proudly proclaimed “low fat” and “fat free” on the front of the package like a badge of honor.

What I didn’t know is that in order to make that food palatable, they replaced the fat with sugar. Honestly, even if I had realized this was happening, it probably wouldn’t have meant too much to me as sugar was given a free pass in terms of how much should be allowed in the diet.

I see this low fat/high sugar diet manifesting different symptoms in different people, but almost entirely across the board, it is showing up in some unpleasant way.

For me, it showed up as depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

For others it’s weight gain, digestive issues, joint pain, and brain fog.

Continued for too long , it’s likely to lead to something much more serious such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

All of this is because taking out the fat and increasing the sugar led to blood sugar imbalances.

It turns out, fat is our friend, and too much sugar is a recipe for disaster!

And of course, I had to talk about insulin resistance, because what else would I talk about? 🤷🏻‍♀️ But, I did take a different angle! When I talk about insulin resistance, I'm typically focused on nutrition, and for good reason! It is where many people are struggling and where you're typically going to get the quickest results. But, it's not the only thing that can impact insulin resistance.

Exercise is also an incredibly powerful tool to have in your toolbox to improve your metabolic health. 💪🏻🏃🏻‍♀️
