Which brain regions are known to be structurally different between autistic and non-autistic people?
🧠 Children and adolescents with autism often have an enlarged hippocampus.
🧠 Some find that people with autism have smaller amygdalae than people without autism, or that their amygdalae are only smaller if they also have anxiety.

For example, labeling someone as 'high-functioning' may cause them to resist help or feel like they don’t need it at all, while calling someone 'low-functioning' can render someone powerless.

Individuals who are minimally verbal may be unable to report their internal states and instead demonstrate anxiety through disruptive behaviors, while others may be verbally fluent but present with difficulties in understanding one's’ own emotions and expressing these emotions.

It is important to remember that situations that create anxiety in one individual may not for another. Some things that can help reduce anxiety for children with autism are:

•New forms of communication
•Creating a safe sensory space
•Self soothing strategies
•Having fidget toys on hand
