Ever tried explaining what anesthesiologists actually do?

Our Center for Patient Simulation (CfPS) brought that story to life during Anesthesiology Family Nights, where residents, faculty, and staff invited loved ones to step into their world—hands-on.
From airway simulations and ultrasounds to mock codes (plus cookies and ice cream 🍦), families experienced what makes anesthesiology so unique, challenging, and rewarding.

Thanks to everyone who joined and helped make this year’s event such a success! Learn more about the CfPS at: https://uofuanesthesia.link/CfPS

When every second counts, teamwork saves lives. Our Center for Patient Simulation (CfPS) team brought their Massive Hemoptysis Simulation to life at the Utah Simulation Coalition Annual Conference, demonstrating how hands-on training transforms crisis response into confident, coordinated care.

A huge thank-you to the Utah Simulation Coalition for fostering collaboration and innovation in simulation-based healthcare training.

“Don’t be fooled by the laid back attitude of all our partners! They are seriously the smartest, most competent, hard-working, brilliant down-to-earth people.”

Meet Dr. Rachel Danowit – Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Director of the Medical Student Anesthesiology Rotation/Clerkship, Anesthesiology Education Fellowship, and WeCARE Council! A long-time member of our department (resident turned fellow turned faculty!), she chose to stay in Utah because of the people, teaching opportunities, and the impact that the University makes.

Our Global Health team recently returned from The Gambia, where they implemented new Lifebox Foundation capnographs, led a case conference national anesthesia review course, and collaborated with anesthesia providers to strengthen patient safety.

In October, we were honored to welcome Professor Baro from The Gambia to The University of Utah for a week of professional exchange and collaboration.

These reciprocal visits—Utah faculty supporting training in The Gambia and Gambian providers engaging in professional development in Utah—reflect our shared focus on sustainable, bi-directional education. Together, we’re building a future where every surgical patient receives safe, high-quality anesthesia care.

Our September Faculty Development Night at the Center for Patient Simulation focused on Single Lung Isolation, a hands-on, simulation-based course providing practical training in one-lung ventilation techniques. Participants reviewed pulmonary anatomy and bronchial segments, gained experience placing and managing double-lumen tubes (DLTs) and bronchial blockers, and built confidence in effective lung isolation.
