Agriculture accounts for more than 70 percent of the state’s water use — much of it going to grow hay and alfalfa to feed livestock. Another 9 percent is taken up by mineral extraction. Cities use another 9 percent to run power plants and irrigate lawns."

One of my passions in medicine (and in life) is environmental medicine--the understanding of how the environment influences our health.

While most of my practice is focused on environmental toxins and pathogens, such as mold and tick-borne illnesses, access to clean and available water is becoming ever more pressing for me, especially here in Utah where we are entering into a severe drought season.

Over the past weekend, I decided to do a fast for approximately a day and a half. While it was awfully difficult at times, I always tend to come away with a newfound appreciation and clarity for life and for what I have. Naturally, my gratitude for water was everpresent. I also found myself feeling angry over how much water is wasted unnecessarily, such as watering lawns.

Even though I would personally like to slowly transition away from lawns, I know I am probably a minority in this. It also doesn't address what we should do in the meantime. Furthermore, I am faced with what I should do as a current renter, where I am expected to keep up the lawn.

At this point, I am trying to figure out how to do the "BOTH AND"--conserve water while making sure I'm not totally killing our lawn.

So after doing a bit more research, I came across a couple of great resources. The first link provides some great "Landscape Tips," while the second link is a "Weekly Lawn Watering Guide." The latter is especially helpful because it tells you how long and how often you should water your lawn, based on weather patterns and evapotranspiration rates.

What are your thoughts about the drought? How are you conserving water; any tips or tricks you'd like to share?

Water-saving actions made a difference and helped stretch the water supply during this extreme drought. The guide will be back next spring when it’s time for outd...

Our Story

Dr. Shawn Postma is a naturopathic physician who helps people with stress-related issues like fatigue, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, cancer, and Lyme disease.

He believes that the nervous system is the symphony conductor of the body and when under chronic stress it greatly diminishes overall health and vitality. By addressing the root cause, he is able to get the lasting results his patients desire.

In addition to offering naturopathic medicine, Dr. Postma specializes in various mind-body techniques. He has received advanced training in biofeedback and utilizes research-based HeartMath® technology to retrain and nourish the nervous system. He also teaches mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy (MBSR) as an effective tool to managing stress.
