Hi, it's Cassi, registered nurse & Child Passenger Safety Technician, with another car seat tip! Rear-facing car seats are the safest position not just for infants, but for toddlers too. Even though it may be tempting to switch at age 2, it is recommended to keep your child rear-facing until well AFTER age 2 and over 30 pounds. Here's why:
✅ In a crash, a rear-facing car seat absorbs the impact forces, protecting your child’s developing head, neck, and spine by cradling their entire body.
🚫 When forward-facing, the crash forces are directed into the harness and your child’s body, which increases the risk of serious injury, especially to the neck and spine.
⚠️ Keep your child rear-facing beyond age 2 until they reach the height OR weight limit set by the car seat manufacturer. Most car seats allow rear-facing well beyond 2 years!
Worried about leg injuries?🦵 It’s a common concern, but leg injuries in rear-facing seats are extremely rare. Children are flexible and can comfortably cross or prop their legs. More importantly, it’s much safer than risking head or spinal injuries in a crash.
Bottom line: Rear-facing = best protection. Keeping your child rear-facing as long as their seat allows could save their life!
