Just posted our TICN September Presentation on our YouTube Channel: "Migraine & Trauma- Is There a Link?" - Link to the presentation in the comments

Migraine is a highly debilitating condition that is estimated to affect 15%-18% of the world’s population, predominantly young/middle-aged women.

Past trauma and chronic interpersonal stress are two etiological factors that have been shown to promote the initiation of migraine and/or its progression from episodic to chronic, possibly through emotional and/or autonomic mechanisms. Currently used behavioral treatments for migraine having “stress relieving properties” (e.g., biofeedback, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been highly recommended to help better manage migraine symptoms either as a standalone or in combination with pharmacotherapy. However, despite their use, these recommended behavioral interventions have small to medium effect sizes and do not provide long-lasting migraine relief. A possible explanation is that these interventions do not directly address the emotional and interpersonal stress consequences of adverse life events, which are so prevalent in the migraine population.

Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET), is a novel manual-based, empirically-supported behavioral intervention that has shown promising results in many controlled and uncontrolled studies in patients with chronic pain, including superiority to the current gold standard, cognitive behavioral therapy. Preliminary data shows that EAET has tremendous potential as a novel and efficacious behavioral treatment for migraine.

The presentation will include an overview of the basic mechanism and clinical characteristics of migraine, followed by an introduction to EAET as a novel treatment for trauma-related chronic pain and migraine.

Participants who work with trauma and/or chronic pain patients are encouraged to participate and learn about this new and promising treatment.

Presenter: Tawna Loveless, Assistant Neurofeedback Program Director & Technician

Being in love with health and well-being from the time I was a teenager, I believe that the health of a person is not based on one thing, but on the balance of all things in an individual's life. As a lifelong learner of mental, physical, and spiritual health you will find me listening to a new book ingesting knowledge, and being deeply passionate about the human experience.

I pursued my bachelor’s degree in Community Health Education as a way to achieve my goals to help others achieve healthy lives. After my degree, I pursued training in Neurofeedback as an Othmer Method Technician using Infra-Low Frequencies to retrain and exercise the brain to gain greater balance and control over itself. I am also double-trained and experienced in both the Alpha-Theta and Synchrony modalities, all using the Cygnet software system. I have extensive experience using neurofeedback training for many concerns including but not limited to; addiction, ADHD, anxiety, autism, behavioral problems, bipolar disorder, depression, mood disorders, headaches/migraines, seizures, impulsivity, low self-esteem, OCD, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, sensory disorders, and sleep problems.

I have been working as a Neurofeedback Technician for almost 5 years now, treating over 4000 Clients in hour-to-hour sessions. I have built an extensive 50-hour Neurofeedback training course with slides and training materials. Taught over 5 of these Neurofeedback courses to dozens of clinicians. I built an extensive symptoms evaluation brain chart with a matching symptoms evaluation packet.

It is amazing and rewarding to witness my clients take on the challenges of their situations and their personal limitations and break their own barriers and heal to degrees they didn’t know they could.

Presentation: Neurofeedback- What it is and What it can treat

Join us for our March TICN Presentation this Friday, the 15th from 6-7:30pm!

Presentation: Key Core Beliefs- The Underlying Perspective of Trauma
In presenting to therapists, I offer key skills that can be used in their practice. This is useful in assessing how an individual is resolving trauma toward achieving evidence-based outcomes.

This presentation explores how self-beliefs are changed by traumatic experiences and how therapists can guide individuals to develop accurate and constructive self-beliefs.

Presenter: Gray Otis, PhD

Based on research and collaboration with mental health therapists, Gray founded Key Core Beliefs, Inc., a nonprofit, that offers training and publications to the public and therapists. He is the author of “Key Core Beliefs, Unlocking the HEART of Happiness and Health,” “Essentials of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Profession,” and “Key Core Beliefs Trauma Care: The Clinician’s Guide to Core-Focused Treatment.”

Because of prior experience in strategic planning and analysis, Gray also offers management consulting that integrates positive psychology with best practices to create innovative solutions. He has worked with senior managers to implement organizational initiatives and develop leadership skills.

He has a doctorate in counseling psychology and masters' degrees in counseling and organizational behavior. He is a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor by the National Board of Certified Counselors and is recognized as a Diplomate and Clinical Mental Health Specialist in Trauma.

Gray is a past president of the American Mental Health Counselors Association and is active in state and national mental health initiatives. He currently serves on the Board of the Utah Mental Health Counselors Association, the Utah State Behavioral Healthcare Workgroup, and the National Committee for the Advancement of Clinical Practice. He frequently presents on the development of mental and emotional abilities, trauma recovery, relationship effectiveness, and the necessity for integrated behavioral health.
