“Let’s go ride our bikes!”

For many kids, riding a bike is a milestone of childhood, and we want to share that experience with as many children as possible.

That’s where Kruisers for Kids comes in. For 31 years, this local organization has rallied the community through its classic car show, raising funds to keep our adaptive bike program rolling. This year’s event ended with six patients pedaling off on brand-new adaptive bikes.

“We are buying over 100 bikes a year thanks to the support from Kruisers for Kids, which is amazing to think about,” Mark Lange, physical therapist and head of the adaptive bike program, said.

While the bikes are a great way to get our kiddos outside and increase coordination, they do so much more.

A parent of a recent bike recipient shared:

“To the amazing donors who provided the adaptive bike for my son, you have given him and our family more than just a bike; it is true freedom and fun. There are so many things we just don’t do because of our limited ability, but with this bike, the whole family can get out and participate instead of just a couple of us at a time. He loves being with his siblings and being independent and a part of something.”

We are so grateful to Kruisers for Kids and their supporters for helping us give our patients the gift of freedom on wheels. 💛

We’ve been telling everyone to register for our Walk for LOVE because:

Meet Kadence and Shelby, aka the “Scoliosis Sisters,” a name they proudly gave themselves. ☺️

Both were treated for scoliosis at Shriners Children’s Salt Lake City, though their journeys looked a little different.

Kadence underwent growing rod surgeries while continuing to be a kid and pursuing activities she enjoyed, like dance.

“I couldn’t bend at the waist, due to the rod in my spine, so Shriners made me a special brace to keep me from bending,” she said. “They found a way for me to dance and taught me that sometimes, you just have to do things a little differently.”

Later, after years of tagging along to Kadence’s appointments, Shelby received a scoliosis diagnosis.

“Although it might sound odd, I was actually excited,” Shelby says. “Before I was even a patient, I got so much help and care, so I knew I’d be taken care of, and I was so happy to finally be a Shriners kid.”

Through it all, the sisters cheered each other on, and now, in honor of National Scoliosis Awareness Month, they’re sharing what they’ve learned along the way.

"Make your brace or cast something you'd love to show off. As you get older, it gets harder to be different, but embracing it helped me stay happy,” Kadence said.

The sisters have found that embracing and sharing your differences can empower not just you, but everyone around you.

“Telling your story can help others be seen,” Shelby said. “Be proud of every part of yourself, you are not alone!”
