Nathan's journey with prostate cancer:
"Three and a half years ago, on March 7, 2022, I was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer at the age of 48. My team of doctors determined it was critical to move quickly and aggressively with treatments. Within a few weeks, I was scheduled for surgery with external beam radiation and hormone deprivation therapy in the months to follow."
"While recovering at home from surgery, I remembered participating in various walks through my work for organizations such as JDRF and the American Cancer Society. I searched to see if there was something here local coming up that would help support this cause so new to me and my family. That is when I found this prostate cancer run/walk. It was sponsored by ZERO Prostate Cancer for 10 years and is now sponsored by the Summit Urology Prostate Cancer Foundation."
"Our first year participating, we made shirts with the saying, 'Speak Up, Show Up'. This is still the message I share and strive to live by."
"We need to speak up to our doctors about symptoms we feel. We need to speak up about how we can prevent getting this disease and how to detect it early on, so it is more treatable. If we are one who is diagnosed, we need to speak up and share our story and journey to bring more awareness to others."
"One in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This is the same ratio for women and breast cancer. We hear a lot more about breast cancer. We even have football players wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. That is wonderful. We need the same awareness for prostate cancer and can do better than we are now."
"We need to show up for our physicals and screenings. We need to show up for treatments. We need to show up in letters and emails to congress men and women pleading for them to support new laws that raise awareness, promote detection, and provide more funding for prostate cancer research. The Utah Prostate Cancer Run/Walk allows all of us to Speak Up and Show Up for each other."
"During my cancer journey, I have so much love and support from my family, friends and co-workers and the walk has been a way I can say 'yes' when they ask if there is anything they can do to help. And they have responded in amazing ways."
"This walk has been life-changing for me. It has provided me with access to information about prostate cancer, treatments and patient/survivor support. It has provided me with a way to share my story, and hear others’ stories, in hopes of helping others through their journeys or to take the right steps to hopefully avoid the journey all together. Most importantly, it has provided me with a community of support who have a common goal of eliminating prostate cancer."
"I invite you to join me, my family, and other prostate cancer heroes on Saturday, September 27th at Wheeler Farm Historical Park for the 2025 Utah Prostate Cancer Run/Walk."
