My Eating Disorder (ED) used to love telling me lies to keep me stuck and keep me from getting better. If you have (or have had) an eating disorder, you have probably been told similar lies.

One of the first things we do in eating disorder treatment is to start to separate your voice from the eating disorder’s voice. It is usually the mean and nasty voice in your head, but until you separate it it feels like your own. It can take people a while to separate their own thoughts from their eating disorders, but when they do, they can start to push against those thoughts.

Anyone else want to share some of their eating disorder’s lies? Let’s make a list!

Did you know that people can suffer from Summer SAD? SAD stands for seasonal affective disorder and I see quite a few patients who experience summer seasonal depression rather than winter seasonal depression.

For those who live in Utah or other hot areas, I think summer SAD can be caused by the extreme heat, which can force people to stay indoors. Less outdoor time in high summer heat compared to spring and Fall can lead to a depressed mood due to reduced sunshine (hello vitamin D) and the inability to do our favorite things. My patients with autoimmune disorders seem to suffer the most.

People often report:
-Low mood, sadness, and loss of interest.
-Increased fatigue and sleep problems.
- Decrease in appetite. This can often make eating regularly challenging, which can then make sticking to a meal plan difficult, further worsening mood.
- Increased anxiety.

If you think you suffer from Summer SAD, here are some recommendations:
- Get back on a good schedule. People often get off their routines in the summer, which can increase seasonal depression.
- Prioritize sleep, even if it doesn't get darker until later.
- Get outside daily for sunshine, preferably in the early morning before it gets too hot, to help maintain a stable circadian rhythm.
-Stay out of high heat to avoid overexertion and fatigue.
- Exercise regularly. Studies show that exercise is often as effective as an antidepressant in treating depression.
- Talk to and work with a therapist.

Lastly, be kind to yourself and allow for some grace while you are going through a rough patch. Things will get better!

I am so excited about our haul from the Bountiful farmers market tonight. One meal later and everything is gone! The food was sooo good! My goal this summer is to try to attend one farmers market every week and do a mid-week stock up on our vegetables. 🙌

Hi everyone! It has been a long time since my last post. I want to start posting more but getting started has been the most challenging thing! Social media and self-promotion have always been hard for me. This area of running a business has always been something that I need to do but never seem to get to. I have always loved to write and I believe that social media is my next growth area that I would like to focus on. I truly believe the best way to grow is to choose to do hard things. As Frederick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” So here’s to doing hard things!

Some updates: This past year has been a whirlwind! I got married this past August and I cannot believe how fast this year has gone by!!! I am so unbelievably grateful for Jason and the fantastic husband, stepdad, and best friend he has been to the kids and me.

Seeing my patients has continued to be incredibly rewarding and busy. I am grateful for all of my patients and what I learn from them daily. My kids have been busy with their sports, school, and busy lives. We have had vacations, adventures, loads of hiking and skiing, state swim meets, and overall, just a lot of good stuff!

Our 14-year-old Frost passed away last year right before the wedding. We were devastated, but she had been doing poorly for a while. I hope she is running pain-free somewhere! We miss her a lot. We waited a few months and adopted another dog right before Thanksgiving. Meet Bella. She is a marshmallow of a dog that snores like a trucker and has become my shadow everywhere I go.

None of this was about nutrition! I hope to start posting more on nutrition topics. Thank you for letting me share a little bit!
