Why does one fall increase the risk of another?

A fall isn’t just a one-time event — it can start a cycle.

Older adults who fall once are more likely to fall again. Here’s why:
🔹 Loss of confidence – Fear of falling leads to less movement.
🔹 Reduced activity – Moving less causes muscle weakness and stiffness.
🔹 Balance changes – The body may start moving more cautiously or stiffly, which actually reduces stability.
🔹 Underlying issues – Weakness, vision changes, or medication side effects may not have been addressed.

The result? Strength decreases. Balance declines. Risk increases.

The good news: this cycle can be broken. 💪

Targeted strength and balance training rebuilds confidence, improves stability, and reduces fall risk.

If you or a loved one has experienced a fall, don’t wait for the next one. Let’s create a plan to stay steady and independent.

Falls don’t always cause immediate pain — but they should never be ignored.

After a fall, you should:
✔️ Take a moment before getting up
✔️ Check for pain, dizziness, or weakness
✔️ Let your doctor or physical therapist know
✔️ Pay attention to any new soreness over the next few days
✔️ Address the why behind the fall — not just the fall itself

A fall is often a warning sign of balance, strength, or mobility issues. Physical therapy can help identify the cause and reduce your risk of falling again.

If you or a loved one has had a fall (or worries about falling), we are here to help!

Most falls happen at home — Why? Because it’s where we move the most — and where our guard is down. We feel comfortable and are often less careful.

Helpful tips to reduce falls at home:
➡️ Improve lighting — Use night lights in hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
➡️ Clear the clutter — Remove loose rugs, cords, and items on the floor.
➡️ Use hand support — Install grab bars in bathrooms and use stair railings.
➡️ Wear proper footwear — Choose supportive shoes with non-slip soles.
➡️ Work on balance & strength — Strong legs and good balance help prevent falls before they happen.

Bonus tip: Physical therapy helps improve balance, strength, and confidence so you can move more safely in your home.

The 3 Systems That Control Balance (And How PT Trains Them)

Balance isn’t just about “being careful.” It’s controlled by three key systems working together:

🧠 1. The Visual System
Your eyes help you understand where you are in space. Changes in lighting, uneven ground, or turning your head all challenge this system.

👂 2. The Vestibular System
Located in the inner ear, this system senses movement and head position. It’s crucial for staying steady when you move, turn, or look around.

🦵 3. The Somatosensory System
This includes muscles, joints, and nerves — especially in the feet, ankles, and hips — sending feedback to your brain about body position.

When one system weakens, the others have to work harder. That’s where physical therapy (PT) comes in.

How PT trains balance:
✔️ Strengthening legs and core
✔️ Challenging balance in safe, controlled ways
✔️ Training vision + head movement together
✔️ Improving joint mobility and body awareness
✔️ Practicing real-life movements (walking, turning, reaching)

Balance can be retrained — at any age.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about confidence and control. At CORE Rehab, we use the Solo-Step which is a manual ceiling-mounted track system that connects to you by lanyard and harness to safely build confidence during balance training.

Ever notice that your balance isn’t quite what it used to be? That’s not “just getting older” — there are real reasons behind it.

As we age, a few things happen:
• Muscles (especially in the legs and core) naturally weaken
• Reaction time slows down
• Joint mobility decreases
• Vision and inner-ear changes affect stability
• We move less, which makes balance decline faster

The good news? Balance is trainable at any age. 🙌

And it doesn’t require anything extreme.

What actually helps:
✔️ Strength training (especially legs, hips, and core)
✔️ Balance-specific exercises (single-leg work, controlled movements)
✔️ Mobility and flexibility
✔️ Consistent practice
✔️ Staying active in everyday life (walking, getting up/down from the floor, changing directions)

Balance isn’t just about avoiding falls — it’s about confidence, independence, and quality of life.
Start now. Your future self will thank you. 💪

⚠️ 5 Warning Signs of Poor Balance ⚠️

Balance problems don’t usually show up all at once — they sneak in. Here are 5 common red flags to watch for:

1️⃣ Feeling unsteady when walking, especially on uneven ground

2️⃣ Holding onto furniture or walls when moving around the house

3️⃣ Difficulty standing on one leg (even briefly)

4️⃣ Needing extra time to recover after a stumble or trip

5️⃣ Avoiding activities because you’re afraid of losing your balance

These signs aren’t “just part of aging.” They are signals that your balance systems need attention.

The good news? Balance can be improved with the right exercises and training — at any age.

Catching these signs early can help prevent falls, injuries, and loss of confidence.
