FUMC-Hillsville offers food boxes every Thursday from 9:30 am – 12 Noon to residents of Carroll County. Families may only receive one box per month. In addition to a prepared box, there is also produce, baked goods and desserts available that clients may choose from.

Mountain View Baptist Church
112 Mountain View Road, Independence, VA
Mountain View Baptist Church in Independence distributes food boxes every other week on Tuesdays at 5pm. Upcoming dates are July 29, August 12, August 26. They are open to the community.

During the month of July, the Rural Health Network is focusing on access to healthy food in the Twin Counties.
This week’s focus is on Food Banks.

God’s Storehouse
406 W. Oldtown St. Galax VA.
God’s Storehouse a non-profit organization helping those in need including the homeless, children in foster care, low income families, those suffering trauma or addictions and many more.
They offer a drive thru Food Box pickup every first Wednesday of the month from 9:30am until gone at their location at 406 W. Oldtown St. Galax VA. They give out 125 boxes each month, with approximately 93% going to seniors between the age of 70 and 80.
They also offer community meals to anyone every Monday and Tuesday from 4-6 pm, serving 120-130 people, and on Wednesdays at 6pm to 60 people who agree to attend their Bible Study. Meals are also offered to attendees of Celebrate Recovery on Thursdays at 5:30pm.

Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems is hosting a blood drive with Marsh Regional Blood Center on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in an early celebration of National Health Center Week, which falls on August 3-9, 2025.

The blood mobile will be set up in the parking lot of Saltville Community Health Center (308 West Main Street, Saltville, VA 24370).

All types of blood are welcome.

Appointments are not required and walk-ins are welcome.

Remote Behavioral Health Therapist – Meadowview

We’re excited to introduce Alex Versen, LCSW, one of the newest members of our behavioral health team at Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems (SVCHS)!

🗓 Joined SVCHS: January 2025
🧠 Experience: Over 10 years in the mental health and social work field
🎓 Education: Master of Social Work (MSW), University of Denver

Alex is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a strong background in trauma-informed care, outpatient counseling, and clinical supervision. They are trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and regularly integrate ACT, CBT, and strengths-based approaches into therapy.

💬 “I’ve always had a deep interest in people’s stories and supporting them through life’s challenges. Social work allows me to combine advocacy, compassion, and clinical skill in a way that truly makes a difference.”

When not providing care, Alex enjoys hiking, kayaking, cooking, and exploring new places—often with friends and family by their side. They're also passionate about mindfulness and self-care practices.

This week’s focus is on Food Banks.

Willing Partners
972 East Stuart Drive, Galax, VA
Willing Partners gives food boxes on Wednesdays from 11am – 3pm, with the exception of the third Wednesday of the month. That week they are open on Saturday, 11am – 3pm, in order to provide food for people who are unable to come during the week. Registration is required, and people may only receive 1 box per month. They serve approximately 700 families per month.
They also offer food distribution at the Dugspur Community Center on the third Saturday of each month to residents of Dugspur only. Call or go to Willing Partners in Galax to register, 276-238-5500.
In the future, Willings Partners is planning to change their pickup procedure to Client Choice. People will be able to walk through the pantry and choose the food that they want. Watch their page for more information. partners

Hands of Grace Food Bank

Hands of Grace offers a drive through food bank on the third Sunday of each month from 3pm – 5pm. They distribute approximately 450 boxes each month. Registration is required due to USDA regulations, but there are no eligibility or residency requirements. of grace food bank

The garden is located beside the Depot, where the Farmers Market is held.
- They are actively looking for volunteers
- Anyone who volunteers can get produce

During the month of July, the Rural Health Network is focusing on access to healthy food in the Twin Counties.

Today’s program is Kid Bucks at the local farmer’s markets.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension services offer Healthy Kids Bucks at farmer’s markets in the Twin Counties. The last opportunity for this program is Thursday, July 24th at the Town of Hillsville Farmers Market from 4 – 6 pm for the first 50 kids. These bucks may used to purchase fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and eggs.

The Town of Hillsville Farmers Market also sponsors $10 in Kids Bucks on August 28th and September 25th.

The Galax Farmers Market offers Kids Buck at various times throughout the season. Check their page for updates.

The Independence Farmers Market gives out $5 of IFM Kids Bucks to the first 20 kids each Friday that can be used to purchase anything at the market.

Visit your local Farmers Market for fresh produce and home cooked food!

We’re excited to shine a light on one of our dedicated mental health professionals — Jessica Barnette! Jessica has been making a meaningful impact at SVCHS since 2017 and has been working in the mental health field since 2012.

With over a decade of experience, Jessica brings a wealth of knowledge and compassion to her work. She holds a Bachelor’s in Human Services/Counseling, a Master’s in Social Work, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), and a Certified Family Trauma Professional. Her professional background spans psychiatric hospitalization, crisis stabilization, outpatient recovery, and behavioral health care management.

💬 “I was drawn to the mental health field because I’ve always been passionate about understanding human behavior and helping others feel seen, heard, and supported,” says Jessica. She’s especially passionate about providing safe, nonjudgmental care for individuals navigating emotional pain, trauma, or addiction.

When she's not working, Jessica enjoys reading, tending to her flower garden, and spending quality time with family and friends — all things that help her recharge and stay grounded.

"Witnessing growth and resilience in people, often during the most challenging times in their lives."
