Two infants in Kentucky have died of pertussis (also known as whooping cough) in the past six months. According to CDC data, reported cases increased to 12,513 in 2025, up from 7,321 in 2024. Pertussis is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that can cause serious health problems in small children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough with the DTaP vaccine given at 2 months of age, with subsequent doses at 4 months and 6 months, and boosters at 15-18 months and 4-6 years. Babies, pregnant women, and children with weak immune systems depend on the rest of us to keep that door closed. That’s the power of community immunity.

This number passed last year’s flu season, which set a previous high for a non-pandemic season with 207 pediatric deaths. Even with seasonal flu activity declining since its February peak, AAP and CDC recommend everyone six months and older get vaccinated against the flu.
