Yes! Therapists can and DO assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions.
I keep hearing therapist say that they "can't diagnose" or "aren't allowed to assess" certain conditions that they were LITERALLY trained to assess and diagnose.
Let's clear this up.
You ARE a trained assessment tool. The DSM is an assessment tool. Your clinical judgment is an assessment tool. The measures you've been trained to use are valid and reliable psychometric assessment tools.
If you've been properly trained, it IS within your scope of practice.
The only things outside your scope are the things that you haven't been trained or qualified to assess, diagnose, or treat.
Somewhere along the way, a lot of clinicians were taught to second-guess themselves and it is limiting good effective ethical healthcare.
We don't need less confidence in this field. We need more clarity, more confidence, and more trust in our training.
If this resonates, I want to hear from you. Where did you learn this and when did you learn this? Drop a comment or send me a DM.
