Parents: Before you sign your child up for a summer virtual program… ask this:

Will they actually be able to access what’s being taught?

Because for children with hearing differences, logging in isn’t the same as learning.

They might be watching the screen…
smiling…
even completing activities…

…but still missing key parts of instruction, discussion, and connection.

Summer is such a valuable window for growth—especially with virtual lessons, tutoring, or enrichment programs.

But access has to come first.

That’s why the CAVE Checklist (Communication Access in Virtual Education) from Supporting Success for Children with Hearing Loss is such an important (and free) tool.

It helps you and your child figure out:
• Can they clearly hear and understand during virtual lessons?
• Are instructions and discussions fully accessible?
• Where are the breakdowns happening?

And here’s the key: don’t figure it out alone.

Share what you learn with your child’s teacher of the deaf and the virtual program provider.

Small adjustments—like captioning, pacing, visuals, or audio setup—can completely change your child’s experience.

Because “it seems fine” isn’t always the full picture.

💡 A few minutes with this checklist can help ensure the time, energy, and money you invest this summer actually leads to real learning.

Because every child deserves more than just showing up. They deserve true access.

This screenshot captures more than a meeting.
It’s a conversation about the future of students with hearing loss—and the teachers who make that future possible.

When we sat down with Dr. John Luckner to discuss the 3rd edition of the Itinerant Teacher’s Handbook, one thing became clear:

The role of itinerant teachers is more critical—and more complex—than ever before.

You’re not just supporting academics.
You’re supporting access, identity, communication, and independence.

And that kind of impact requires more than experience alone.

It requires guidance that evolves with you.

If you’ve been looking for something that truly understands the realities of your work, this is a conversation worth paying attention to.

Because when teachers are supported well, students thrive.

Hot take: you can tell a lot about someone by the books they buy.
For me, reading isn’t just a hobby—it’s the foundation for everything. Language, connection, learning… it all starts there.

The other day I found myself in Target picking out a book for a couple I know who’s about to welcome a new baby—and it just felt like the most meaningful gift I could give.

Because before the lessons, before the strategies, before school even begins… there are words, stories, and shared moments that shape everything that comes next.

And maybe that’s why I’ll never leave a store without at least one book in hand 😄

More to come. Stay tuned!

How much of your day depends on reading?

Now imagine trying to navigate that same day without it.
For so many students who are deaf or hard of hearing, this is bigger than academics. It’s about something we don’t always stop to think about.

Teachers of the deaf, you’re balancing impossible caseloads.
Parents, you’re thinking about your child’s future every single day.

This is why reading matters more than most people realize.

Let us know: What’s one everyday moment where reading really matters for your child or students?

You can only be in one place at a time… so why does your caseload demand you be everywhere at once?

Between back-to-back campuses, constant scheduling changes, IEP prep, progress monitoring, and trying to give each student the attention they deserve, it’s no wonder so many itinerant teachers of the deaf feel stretched thin and running on empty.

You didn’t choose this work to feel overwhelmed. You chose it to make a difference.

But when your day is driven by logistics instead of impact, it’s hard to feel like you’re doing your best work.

What if you had a roadmap? Something built specifically for your role that helps you streamline your workload, prioritize what matters, and feel more in control of your day?

The Itinerant Teacher’s Handbook, 3rd Edition was created with you in mind. Practical strategies. Real-world solutions. Tools you can actually use.

Less chaos. More clarity. Better support for your students and for you.

Some families don’t miss the signs.
They’re told to wait.
They’re told it’s nothing.
They’re told their child will “grow out of it.”

And then—everything changes.

"Late to the Party: Extraordinary Stories of Hope After Late-Identified Hearing Loss" shares the powerful, real-life journeys of sixteen families who fought to be heard before their children could be. Through deeply personal interviews, author and parent advocate Valerie James Abbott reveals the heartbreak, the delays, the system gaps—and ultimately, the resilience that followed.

These stories will stay with you.

Because this isn’t just about hearing loss.
It’s about missed opportunities.
Dismissed concerns.
And the urgent need to do better—for every child.

This one-of-a-kind collection connects lived experience with the reality behind the data—and calls for meaningful change in early identification and support for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

📅 Available May 5
Be ready to purchase and share with the families and professionals who need it most.

Because no child should have to wait to be heard.

One small change can make a world of difference.
When you’re speaking to a student who is deaf or hard of hearing, face them.

It sounds simple. But too often, instructions are given while turning away, writing on the board, or moving around the room. And in those moments, access is lost.

For many students who are DHH, seeing your face isn’t just helpful. It’s essential. Facial cues, expressions, and lip movements all support understanding.

✨ Try this today:
Before you start speaking, pause, turn, and make sure your student can see you.

That one adjustment can mean the difference between confusion and connection.

Save this as a reminder
Share it with an educator who needs this simple, powerful tip.
