Start with four digital boundaries: sleep, school, safety, and connection.

You do not need a complicated screen time plan. You need a clear one.

Taking the phone away may stop the behavior for a moment.
But it does not always change the pattern.

If your teen seems hooked on their phone, ask:
What is the phone doing for them?
Connection?
Escape?
Stress relief?
Boredom relief?
Social belonging?
Avoidance?

This does not mean the phone gets to run your home.
It means you pair the limit with structure, replacement, and connection.

This week on The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m talking about teen phone addiction and why limits alone are not enough.

A screen time rule like “be on your phone less” usually does not work.
It is too vague.

A better rule is:
“Phones charge in the kitchen at 9:30 on school nights.”
Clear rules are easier to follow and easier to hold.

This week on The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m talking about screen time family rules that actually work — without constant arguing, nagging, or power struggles.
Start with one rule.
Protect sleep first if that is the biggest issue.

And remember: your teen does not have to love the rule for the rule to be appropriate.

Parent coaching is not about fixing your child.

It is not about blaming you.
It is about helping you understand the patterns happening in your family so you can respond with more clarity, connection, and confidence.

In this week’s episode of The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m breaking down:
What parent coaching actually is
How parent coaching differs from therapy
Why communication is often at the center of family change
How coaching can help with screen time, attitude, anxiety, shutdowns, and conflict
Why I often include tweens and teens in the process when they are willing
Why connection and relationship are at the heart of everything
Sometimes parent coaching includes your tween or teen too.

When a young person is willing, having a coach involved can create a bridge between parent and child.
Not someone to lecture them.
Not someone to shame them.
Not someone to simply take the parent’s side.
But someone who can connect, be direct, translate what is happening, and help both sides understand each other more clearly.

At the heart of my work is this belief:
The best parenting skill is already inside of you.
It is the relationship and connection you have with your child.
That is what they leave home with.
Not a parenting strategy.
The relationship.

Is your teen constantly on their phone?

Before you call it “digital addiction,” slow down and look at the pattern.
What is screen time replacing?
Sleep?
Homework?
Movement?
Family connection?
Real-life friendships?

This week on The Single Parenting Reset Show, I’m talking about digital addiction in teens in a practical, non-shaming way.
The goal is not to become the screen police.
The goal is to become the calm, clear leader your child needs in a digital world that is constantly pulling at them.

What is parent coaching?

It is not therapy.
It is not generic parenting advice.
And it is not about fixing your child.

Parent coaching helps families understand the patterns they are stuck in and build better communication, clearer boundaries, stronger repair, and more connection.

And when a tween or teen is willing, I often include them too — because sometimes a young person needs a bridge, not another lecture.

Many parents think overwhelmed teens need more pressure, more consequences, or more fixing.
But emotionally overloaded teens often experience excessive questions and advice as MORE pressure.
And pressure creates more shutdown.

According to the CDC’s 2024 Youth Risk Behavior Survey using 2023 teen data:
• Nearly 40% of teens reported persistent sadness or hopelessness
• 20% seriously considered su***de

Teen mental health struggles are real right now.
What helps most often is:
• emotional safety
• calm nervous systems
• connection
• less interrogation
• and supportive adult relationships

Your teen does not need a perfect parent.
They need a connected one.

Your teen’s emotional outburst is not always “bad behavior.”
Sometimes it is a sign that they do not yet have the skills to recognize, name, and manage what is happening inside of them.

In this episode, I talk with Dr Rosina McAlpine about emotional intelligence in teens and preteens — what it is, why it matters, and how parents can help build it at home.

We talk about:
🔸 Why “calm down” usually does not work
🔸 How to help teens name their emotions
🔸 Why emotional intelligence affects relationships, school, and wellbeing
🔸 How screen time can impact mood
🔸 Ways parents can model regulation
🔸 How to help teens build empathy and relationship skills

Teen attitude is not the problem.

It’s how we respond to it that either makes it worse…
or turns it into a teaching moment.

If your teen is talking back, rolling their eyes, or being disrespectful…

Try this instead of reacting:
“You’re allowed to be upset…
you’re not allowed to be disrespectful.”
Then pause.
No lecture.
No power struggle.
Just calm leadership.

That’s how teens actually learn.

If your teen is always on their phone…
and your screen time limits aren’t working…

It’s not because you’re doing it wrong.
It’s because limits alone don’t teach your teen how to manage screen time.

In this episode, I walk you through how to:
✔️ Reduce screen time battles
✔️ Set clear expectations
✔️ Build real responsibility
This is the shift that actually works.
