It's my honor to be a member of the board at San Antonio's Christian Dental Clinic located on the Haven For Hope Campus. They provided close to $4.5 million dollars in services to those who cannot afford dental care. This dramatically lowered emergency room visits and helped enable many to smile at their job interviews. This is part of pulling our brothers and sisters out of the strangle holds of addictions and poverty.

The patient was advised to have all his teeth removed and replaced with dental implant supported teeth.
I have been involved in many of these transitions and they have benefited many patients, however first try to work with the teeth you have.

February is Gum Disease Awareness Month in Texas, declared by Governor Abbott in 2015. Raising awareness is a good start, but it’s not enough—many people still lose teeth unnecessarily. Thankfully, modern treatments are now easier, cheaper, and more comfortable.

We the public are learning so much.

Brush gently with a soft-bristle brush. Brushing too hard can harm your gums. Plaque removal doesn’t need force.
A patient worried about gum color changes. She brushed harder, making it worse. When first seeing me her request was for a biopsy. It wasn't necessary.
Focus on brushing often, not hard. Brush twice daily and floss once a day.

I Have a Dream (With a nod to MLK).
My dream is to see a radical change in dental healthcare delivery.
But I am one small — and so far — independent voice who is usually crying in the wilderness.
Most periodontal treatment is exclusive to a small population who can afford it and this results in disease progression for most who want to recover from the devastating effects of chronic gum disease.
For many, once the insurance company has determined conditions have gone too far, is to replace the natural teeth with dental implant supported false teeth (which insurance companies don’t cover).
What I have witnessed, however, is that many people can keep most of their teeth much longer than many experts say is possible.
With the LANAP procedure performed by a seasoned periodontist profound reversals are routinely achieved with little overall cost.
For the cost of about one root ca**l, gum disease can be arrested and even to a great extent reversed.
To learn more, read my patient reviews to see how others have found my services and then give my office a call. I will help support and guide you into a future that you might not believe — or are being told — is possible.

I graduated from high school but not from college. That’s because I was accepted into dental school without completing my degree.
I was an English major. That put me in an extremely small group within my dental school class who were not science majors (about 6 out of 93 of us). I chose English because I knew I would have to get plenty of science in order to apply to dental school. I thought English would broaden my college experience. It turned out to work well for me because I enjoy writing.
My dad was a dentist. He practiced in El Cajon, California. After twenty-five years as a general dentist he closed his office and went back to full-time school at the same dental school I was later to attend - Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. This was two hours north of our home, so for two years he commuted, living three days in our family motor home and four days home. Two years later he reopened his dental office as an endodontist (root ca**l specialist).
I applied and was accepted to a Health Professions Scholarship with United States Air Force in the freshman year of dental school. I applied to the Army, Navy and Air Force and was turned down by all three the first time and two out of three the second time. This sounds bad, but that was the competition at the time with hundreds of applicants wanting their ways paid through school. I was picked up as one of only eighteen in the country on this second round and then the scholarship was closed to future dental students for well over a decade. Moral of the story: Don’t give up, even if you have to go through six group a**l examinations.
Following graduating from dental school I went on active duty to serve back my time. As part of this I was trained in a one-year general dental practice residency, then sent to Germany for about four years and then returned to be trained for three more years as a periodontist. Following this I taught in a one-year program similar to the one I was trained in - and following this, I ran what is essentially a dental hygiene school for the Air Force. Then I retired and started into private practice. I taught a little at the dental school here in San Antonio - the same school where I did much of my training and all of my research to obtain my Masters Degree.
A part of my career was involved with a technology start-up called Nexsmile. The technology was groundbreaking at the time but the economy in the 2007 time period was awful and it failed to get the funding needed to become a sustainable business. I learned a lot and much of what I learned helps me today with all my dental implant procedures.
I wrote a book about flossing because there are so many misunderstandings that I found myself spending a lot of time with patients on this one topic. In spite of the time I would take, there was still more I wish I could tell them. You can download a Kindle sample on Amazon. It’s called The Joy of Flossing.
I have eight grandchildren: six from my two biologic daughters and two from my Japanese foreign-exchange daughter.
I live in an Airstream. His name is Dwelbert. My truck’s name is Jack (after the Ray Charles's 1961 hit song) and I’m a born-again Christian.
I work with a lot of great general dentists all over the city and beyond but approximately half of the patients who come to see me do not have a general dentist. This is fine because periodontics has to do with the health of all of the things that hold teeth in. For this reason I can help diagnose and direct care to make sure you get the treatment that works best for you. And because of my unusual career path, you now know that I will work hard to effectively help you understand your dental problems and all reasonable treatment options that can move you toward better health. And you can book your own appointment from my page or my website: dryoungperiodontics.com.
