Did you know that nitrous oxide, AKA laughing gas can be used as a form of pain management during active labor?

At the last birth I attended, I asked the L&D nurse if the hospital offered Niteous Oxide, and she looked at me as if I were insane.

It really is a great way to help with pain management if you are wanting to avoid an epidural or if it is not readily available.

If you are curious, check out this blog post from Evidence Based Birth.

In this video you will learn about nitrous oxide gas and how it can be used during labor for pain relief. We discuss the research evidence on nitrous oxide during labor and the main pros and cons of this approach to pain management.

I know first hand how frustrating it can be to have a screaming baby and not know what to do to make them feel better. You've fed them, burped them, changed them...what else could it be?!?

This resource is super helpful for those of you with infants at home. It is a very short read that discusses why babies cry, and even provides listening examples. I have also found it helpful to teach baby signs early. Signs like milk, eat, and hurt can be really important when your baby can't verbally communicate their needs.

A doula and midwife are not the same…
Now with the birth of Zara, my midwife was phenomenal and did it all when she could; however, with Max and Gavin I had midwives but very different experiences.

When planning for your birth, take the time to really think about who you want in your tribe! Midwives and doulas make a great team! OBGYNs, doulas, and nurses also make a great team! Everyone should be working together to ensure you and baby are supported.

What are some of your postpartum MUST HAVES?

Afterease - was a life saver! It really helped with those pesky contractions that happen after your birth.

Herbal Afterbath from In His Hands Birth Supply - Extremely soothing in the peri bottle.

High Waisted Briefs - I picked them up from Amazon...so comfy! Amazon also has the infamous mesh panties, but in like a boy-short style.

Preparation H - You know why...

Snacks for your nightstand - needs no explantation!

Frida Mom - Everything! They also make the best peri bottle. Yes you get one from the hospital, but this one has a very smart design.

A birth plan is a list of your preferences relating to the hospital or birthing center environment, your medical options, and the immediate care of your newborn. How many of you actually created a birth plan? What were some of your non-negotiables?

For me...I refused to stay in bed. They could figure out how to monitor things while I moved around. I also did not want to be hooked up to an IV, as it restricts movement, so I just had them put a hep-lock in, just in case of an emergency.

Preparing for a baby can be so much fun. Whether it's getting their nursery together, washing their cute little onsies in that fancy detergent, or getting the carseat installed. Be sure to take a little time to reflect on what you want your birth to look like.

Alright...hear me out. Raise a virtual ✋🏾 if you swore during labor 🤬. I DID!!! With all three of my kids! I even apologized to those attending my first two births afterwards, but the third...I was so comfy with my midwife and my surroundings it didn't matter. Some birthing people let out a low groan, and others swear like drunken sailors. Whatever you do, it’s fine, just do whatever helps you to feel comfortable and in control.

Science actually shows that swearing can have a painkilling effect, especially for people who don't usually swear. When you swear, it triggers the fight or flight response, which lessens perceived pain.

There's your excuse...swear away! Really though...when in labor find your groove and do WHATEVER makes you comfortable. It doesn't matter who is in the room, your comfort matters.

Will baby come early, be on time or arrive late? There is always much speculation from everyone about this, but Mother Nature and babies are in strong cahoots and we never know when they will decide it is time. To ensure I am available when you go into labor, I only take a certain number of clients with generous time on either side of the due date.
