Exploring the Role of Fever in Fighting Illness:

Fevers are often seen as a sign of something wrong, but they actually serve a vital purpose in the body's defense system. When you encounter an infection from bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens, your body initiates an immune response to fight them off.

This response includes the release of special chemicals called pyrogens, which act like a thermostat setting in the brain. Pyrogens reset your body's internal temperature to a higher level, causing the characteristic rise in body temperature we recognize as a fever.

This fever isn't a random occurrence; it's a strategic defense mechanism. The elevated temperature creates an unhospitable environment for many pathogens. Their growth and reproduction slow down or even halt at these higher temperatures, making it easier for the body's immune system to identify and eliminate them.

Furthermore, fever can stimulate the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infection. So, while a fever can feel uncomfortable, it's actually your body's way of actively fighting off illness.

What Are the Causes of Stone Bruise?

The term stone bruise tends to be a nonmedical catch-all name for pain symptoms that feel like there's a stone in your shoe, jabbing the bottom of your foot every time you take a step.
The most common cause of a stone bruise is an impact injury to the bottom of your foot caused by stepping down hard on a small hard object such as a rock.
Runners, who have many hard foot impacts when they run, are likely to occasionally find themselves with a stone bruise, especially if they run on rocky terrain.
When your foot makes contact with an object, you might feel the pain immediately, or it may take 24 to 48 hours for the bruise to materialize.
Because we spend so much time on our feet, a bone bruise from an impact injury can be annoyingly persistent, affecting every step we take.

What Usually Causes a Fever?

Fever occurs when a part of the brain called the hypothalamus shifts the set point of your normal body temperature upward. When this happens, you may feel chilled and add layers of clothing, or you may start shivering to generate more body heat. This eventually results in a higher body temperature.

There are numerous different conditions that can trigger a fever. Some possible causes include:

- Infections, including the flu and pneumonia.
- Some immunizations, such as diphtheria or tetanus (in children).
- Teething (in infants).
- Some inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and Crohn's disease.
- Blood clots.
- Extreme sunburn.
- Food poisoning.
- Some medications, including antibiotics.

Depending on the cause of the fever, additional symptoms may include:

- Sweating.
- Shivering.
- Headache.
- Muscle aches.
- Loss of appetite.
- Dehydration.
- General weakness.

- Blocked blood vessels.

What Is the Difference between a UTI and Bladder Infection?

Bladder infections and urinary tract infections are inherently similar, which is why the two terms are often confused. However, there is a major distinction between the two that, once understood, helps to differentiate between the different types of infections. Urinary tract infections can occur anywhere in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, urethra, and ureters, as well as the bladder. Conversely, bladder infections are infections of the bladder and do not affect any other part of the urinary tract. In the simplest terms, bladder infections are urinary tract infections, but not all urinary tract infections are bladder infections.

What Is a Bladder Infection?

A bladder infection is an infection of the bladder, the organ that stores urine until it can be excreted from the body. They are very common and, in most cases, do not cause significant damage or harm. However, in certain situations, bladder infections can be painful and lead to serious complications, such as kidney infections or sepsis. Women are more likely than men to have bladder infections due to their anatomy; females have shorter urethras, so the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel, resulting in a higher risk of a bladder infection. It is estimated that every year, anywhere between 20 and 50 million people in the United States have a bladder infection. Symptoms of a bladder infection can include pain when urinating, frequent urination, urine with a strong, foul odor, and blood in the urine. Bladder infections are typically treated with antibiotics and should clear up within a few days or weeks of taking the medication as prescribed. There are many different types of bacteria that can cause a bladder infection, but one of the most common types of bacteria is Group A Streptococcus (GAS).

What Happens If IBS Goes Untreated?

While IBS is not considered a life-threatening condition, it can pose serious complications if left untreated, including:
- Pain and Discomfort - IBS can cause pain or discomfort, especially if it goes on for long periods.
- Bloating - A common symptom associated with IBS with constipation (IBS-C) is bloating, where the bowel becomes blocked up, allowing the bacteria within the gut to continue to ferment.
- Hemorrhoids - Also known as piles, hemorrhoids are commonly associated with IBS; if the underlying condition is not properly managed, hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable and could risk getting worse as time goes on.
- Diverticulitis - In some cases, IBS can contribute to other issues, such as diverticulitis; this can arise if the bowels bulge as a result of the backlog of waste.

How Do You Calm Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

IBS is a relatively common condition affecting about 1 in 7 people worldwide and is more common in women than in men. Usually, people will first notice symptoms of IBS between the ages of 20 and 30. An IBS flare-up may result in more gut symptoms such as abdominal cramping, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or mucus in stool. Other less common symptoms can include joint pain, fatigue, headache, anxiety, or depression. To calm an IBS flare-up, it is usually recommended to avoid a high-FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for fructans (such as garlic, broccoli and wheat), oligosaccharides (such as beans and lentils), lactose/dairy (such as yogurt and milk products from a cow), fructose (sugar from fruit), and polyols (naturally occurring sugar alcohols such as in cauliflower and plums). Better foods include nuts and seeds, cooked vegetables, white meats, and brown rice.

Stress can also worsen the symptoms of IBS and contribute to a flare-up. This is due to the gut-brain connection and is the reason why relaxation techniques recommended for the mind are also helpful to calm the gut. Two ways to reduce stress include mindful meditation and yoga. These two relaxing practices can help reduce anxiety and stress.

Can You Go to Urgent Care for a Cold and Flu?

If your cold or flu has lasted for longer than seven days, it is time to see a doctor. If you have a cough that includes yellow or green mucus, are feeling weak, or have a high fever, it is time to visit your doctor or urgent care clinic. They can determine what the right treatment is needed to get your health back. Allowing these to progress can lead to serious illness. Urgent care clinics can be a wonderful option for non-life-threatening health concerns.
