NICU Awareness Month… we celebrate!

This month we celebrate: the tiniest humans; the little heroes that overcome the obstacles; the incremental weight gain that is measured in grams; the ability to breathe without support; the recovery from surgery; the maturity to feed and thrive; the first view of a precious face without a nasal cannula and NGT; the fatigued parents who love and hold; the hospital staff members that make miracles happen! And soooo much more.

Feeding with Containment. Why? “The baby will get sleepy and eat less!” Not true! Providing containment (physical borders - usually with a swaddle and/or wrap) keeps the NICU infant organized and in a good state during feeding; it provides the opportunity for a stress-free feeding.
A few days/weeks ago your baby was in the womb with 24/7 physical borders… Now physical borders are present intermittently. Your infant continues to seek this input as it is familiar and safe… in other words, this is their SAFE place!

Is a pedi/infant MBSS (swallow study) a pass or fail assessment? No! There is a TON of valuable information that can be used to positively alter the current feeding plan. Some examples include: suck/swallow ratio, posterior retention, timing of swallow initiation, presence of residuals, nasal reflux, and so much more. Aspiration/penetration isn’t everything.
