Colon Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight: Meet Dr. Guirl!

He and his wife are originally from San Antonio and have three children. Dr. Guirl is a competitive swimmer and enjoys traveling, scuba diving, and college football.

Dr. Guirl joined Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio in 2004 after completing his training at Baylor University Medical Center.

His interests include screening colonoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, and hepatology as well as therapeutic and capsule endoscopy.

Dr. Guirl is active in several professional organizations including the American College of Gastroenterology and the Bexar County Medical Society.

He is also a past President of the Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight: Meet Dr. Garza!

Dr. Garza is a San Antonio native and graduate of Central Catholic High School and St. Mary’s University. He's fluent in Spanish and enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He also enjoys jogging, fishing, and basketball.

He has a special interest in colon cancer screening and the diagnosis and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux. He is very involved in teaching young medical students and is an active participant in numerous professional organizations and societies.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight: Meet Dr. Gancayco!

Dr. Gancayco is honored to join Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio after a distinguished 24-year career in the U.S. Air Force, where he earned the rank of Colonel. He holds a degree in Writing and Literature from Georgetown University and received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Gancayco completed his internal medicine residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center and his gastroenterology fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Throughout his military career, Dr. Gancayco has had the privilege of practicing medicine worldwide. He served as Chief of Gastroenterology at Okinawa Naval Hospital, providing care for U.S. service members and their families, and treated soldiers returning from Afghanistan at Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany. He also deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

A passionate educator, Dr. Gancayco served as Program Director for the gastroenterology fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center, where he trained over 45 fellows with a perfect 10-year board first-pass rate. He has mentored hundreds of medical students and holds the rank of Associate Professor. His research and clinical expertise are demonstrated through his role as primary investigator for more than 15 Phase III clinical trials, as well as his numerous publications and contributions to medical literature, including a book chapter.

Dr. Gancayco’s leadership extends beyond clinical practice. He served as the Specialty Leader for the Air Force Surgeon General and as the American College of Gastroenterology’s Military Governor.

He specializes in all aspects of digestive health, including colon cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis. Above all, he values the patient relationship and is committed to providing the latest advancements in gastroenterology to improve his patients’ well-being.

Dr. Gancayco and his wife Ela have called San Antonio home for the last decade, where they enjoy supporting their children in both the arts and sports. Outside of work, he enjoys barbecuing, fly fishing, running, reading, and traveling with his family.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month Spotlight: Meet Dr. Gajendran!

Dr. Mahesh Gajendran earned his medical degree in Chennai, India, and moved to the United States in 2007 to continue his medical training. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and later gained extensive experience in academic medicine at institutions such as UPMC and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. He went on to complete his Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and also earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

As a clinician-scientist, his research has focused on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and functional bowel disorders, leading to presentations at national conferences, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters. His work has been recognized with the Steven Schenker Editor-in-Chief Award during fellowship and the Resident Research Award during residency.

Teaching and mentorship are among his greatest passions. Inspired by his own mentors, he has enjoyed guiding medical students and residents throughout their training and has had the privilege of serving as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Texas Tech University.

His clinical interests include colon cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), liver disease, IBD, and functional bowel disorders. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, and I stay active through tennis, pickleball, hiking, biking, and traveling.
