--- ...A leading expert in the field of ADHD, Dr. Russell Barkley, has said ADHD is a disorder of executive functioning. To sum up this idea, as presented in his article titled, "The Important Role of Executive Functioning and Self-Regulation in ADHD,” ADHD is a disorder of self-regulation. Self-regulation involves using mental skills to control our actions and “manage ourselves effectively so as to attain our goals and see to our long-term welfare." ---
Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child tells us executive functioning is a set of life skills which prepare us to manage school/work, friendships, and family from early childhood well into adulthood.

Thank you Resilient Little Hearts for this great reminder!
Young children haven’t yet developed the neurological capacity of self-regulation.
The part of our brain that is responsible for self-control (the pre-frontal cortex), doesn’t completely develop until young adulthood.
This means it’s normal when children don’t have words to explain their feelings (& when there are emotional outbursts or meltdowns).
This is not a sign of “bad parenting”, it is a sign of normal childhood 💛
Over time, as we continue to cultivate a connected relationship with them; & model emotional health by talking about feelings, they will develop healthy expressions of their emotions.
We support them to develop self-regulation through relationships with safe adults (co-regulation) 💛

"How can I help my child?... What should I expect?... Are we the only one's who are going through this?... Will my child need therapy?... Will my child get better?... Who can help us now?... Nothing seems to be working..."
I hear questions and comments such as these very frequently from concerned parents who want the very best for their child, as any parent should. Trauma has a way of touching every area of our lives, which results in lasting adverse effects on our physical, social, spiritual, relational, and emotional well-being. Our minds and bodies will always adapt as much as possible, but something still doesn’t feel right. Life becomes heavier and heavier.
Relationships are often hard, messy, sometimes tragic, and full of unimaginable grief. But there is another side to them. Research continues to show us that relationships can also be healing.
Healing Minds Behavioral Health is a trauma-focused counseling practice for children, adolescents, and families. I truly value and honor the therapeutic relationship between counselor and client and believe it is the agent of change and healing in the lives of my clients. I am well-trained in trauma treatment that, 1) recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in children and families and, 2) understands potential pathways for recovery to help you and your child heal, and am convinced that given the right environment and support, our bodies and minds are designed to do just that.
We realize that engaging in counseling is a major decision and you may have many questions. Finding the right therapist for you or your child is important. We understand this and to help you take that first step, we are committed to providing you with compassionate consultation to help determine if treatment at Healing Minds Behavioral Health is right for you and your child.
