🎶Music is powerful—especially when words fail.🎶
A few days ago, during a visit with one of my sweet patients who lives with dementia, she was experiencing a moment of agitation and confusion. Instead of trying to redirect her with conversation alone, I gently began singing 🎤a Tejano song—“Tu Solo Tu.” by Selena.
While Selena is one of her favorite artist, she lit up because of her love for Tejano music. She shared how much she and her late husband used to enjoy dancing to that style of music, and hearing it brought back warm, joyful memories. Her mood shifted from restless to calm and happy. We laughed and sang, and for a few beautiful moments, she was fully present and at peace.
This is why music memory and music therapy are part of my daily visits and a cornerstone of care we provide.
Music can unlock emotions and memories in a way that words and routines alone often can’t. It helps ground, soothe, and connect—even in the face of dementia or Alzheimer’s.
It is truly my pleasure and honor to work with the elderly community—sharing happiness, peace, and connection in whatever ways I can. Moments like these are what make my work so meaningful.
If you’re caring for someone with memory loss, try playing music they’ve always loved. You never know what beautiful memories it might bring to life.
