Sometimes it’s not a muscle or fascia problem 🤷♀️
A client came to me exhibiting a global body spasm. All his muscles were high-tone and not showing proper autogenic responses. Common reasons for this include emotional, environmental, dietary… any number of things, but usually not musculoskeletal issues. I did a few things to wind down the nervous system and none of them touched it. I was going to check for food sensitivities, but decided to check environmental triggers first. I had him pinch his nose and try to exhale (through the nose). This temporarily de-stimulates the olfactory nerve. Everything unlocked. He breathed in again and everything re-locked. It could have been something in my office, but that’s unlikely. It’s usually something they’re wearing (cologne, detergent, soap, shampoo, etc). We cleared his olfactory nerve again and had him inhale, but this time with a piece of paper held just just below his chin as a barrier to smells coming from his body. Everything stayed clear. This ruled out shampoo, cologne, aftershave, toothpaste, etc. I told him to bring samples of his various body products to the next visit.
I saw him for a follow-up the next week. He had discontinued multiple products since I saw him last week, so he was actually testing clear. I had him sniff each product he brought in turn to see if any caused him to lock. It was the bar soap. One sniff and the whole body locked down.
