Did you know I am a Certified Health Coach? I recently graduated from the required course for licensing, Coaching Intensive Practicum 2.0. I am now eligible to apply to sit for the exam to become a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach. Next year I will become a licensed health coach! This is huge for the health coaching industry in both advancement and credentialing.

The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) has collaborated with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) since 2016 to provide a robust board certification examination which has led to more than 5,000 National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches that hold the NBC-HWC credential. The esteemed NBC-HWC credential represents training, education, and assessment standards, allowing for the profession to advance in all aspects of health care and wellness.

I recently had the frustrating experience of someone telling me everyone who is struggling with excess body weight “just has to eat less and move more, no one needs a health coach.” There are many reasons this concept doesn’t work. In theory it sounds easy but it can lead to many negative reactions in individuals who try this without their desired results. I coach people through developing a way of life that is specific to them and sustainable. One theory approach to healthy living doesn’t work. Let me work along side of you to achieve your health goals!

From Coach Abel: “Attempting to “eat less to lose more” is a fool’s game. It leads to long-term consequences of Yo-Yo dieting and often leads to psychological disorders as well; like anxiety, depression and eating disorders. In the short-term these calories-deprivation diets lead to lack of energy, a compromised immune system, a compromised reproductive cycle in women, adult ADD/ADHD, impaired cognitive function, irritability, low libido, disrupted sleep patterns and other ill-effects of depriving your body too much and for too long. As eating disorder expert David Garner (PHD, professor of psychiatry at Michigan State University) put it; “It is now only the rate of weight regain after a diet that is subject to discussion; the fact of weight-regain is inevitable:”

Hopefully we are all out enjoying some of the beautiful summer time and getting Vitamin D the natural way by spending a little time each day in the sunshine. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps with calcium absorption - promoting the health and remineralization of your bones, it plays an important role in your immune system, digestion, circulation and nervous system. Did you know Vitamin D also important in illnesses such as depression?

It's important to not allow your skin to become sunburned. Just 10 - 30 minutes a few times a week out in the sunshine is suggested. People with darker skin tones need more time than people with lighter skin. Any time spent beyond this suggestion you should use a safe sunscreen to prevent burning.

Making sure you incorporate foods rich in Vitamin D on a regular basis is another way to ensure you prevent your levels from dropping too low. Some foods include fatty fish, mushrooms, pasture- raised eggs, and cheese.

It's important to know your Vitamin D levels before you begin supplementing it. This can be done through a simple blood test. If it needs to be supplemented be sure to take with Vitamin K2 and magnesium to maximize efficacy. Vitamin D improves magnesium absorption but taking high doses of Vitamin D alone can deplete magnesium levels. K2 helps to avoid complications associated with excessive arterial calcification. Be sure the Vitamin D is D3.
