Here's your exclusive first look at a brand-new piece of art by the incredible Francesca Simonite, created right here in the hospital! Francesca's passion for collage art sparked a truly special project: our patients and team members created mini collages that she wove into this vibrant, uplifting artwork. This is the result! 🎨💖

This beautiful piece, soon to be installed in one of our new clinics, perfectly captures the role of art in healing. Discover more about our SaludArte: Art of Healing program at: https://ow.ly/42hb50Wwchs.

After receiving a life-saving liver transplant in 2021, Mark Hirsch was on the road to recovery. Physically, he felt stable — but emotionally, things were more complicated. The stress and constant worry he had lived with for so long were suddenly gone, replaced by an unfamiliar sense of quiet that left him feeling unsure of what to make of it.

That stillness became the starting point for something deeper: healing. Through journaling, therapy, and the support of University Health’s Transplant Wellness Center, Mark began to rebuild — not just his health, but his sense of self.

“The surgery saves your body — but true healing comes from within.”

With the guidance of Dr. Raj and the incredible Wellness team, Mark found clarity, resilience, and purpose. Today, he and his wife Malorie honor caregivers whose strength and love carry patients through the toughest moments.

His message to others walking the transplant journey is simple, but powerful: “Let go of the illusion that you have to control everything. There is help. There is hope. You don’t have to do this alone.”

If you're a transplant patient interested in therapy or emotional support, the Wellness Center at University Health offers resources designed to help you through every step of your journey. Talk to your nurse coordinator to learn how you can access these services and discover more at: www.universityhealth.com/services/transplant-care/transplant-institute-wellness-center

In just 10 minutes the temperature in a car can shoot up 19 degrees putting a child’s life at risk. ⚠️

Parents can remind themselves that little ones are in the back seat by placing a toy up front as a reminder or an essential item like their cell phone in the back seat next to the child, said our expert Jennifer Northway. Texas sadly leads the nation in the number of children who suffer heatstroke after being trapped in a vehicle. Let’s change that!

P.S. This applies to pets and the elderly as well!

15/07/2025

In October 2023, Kristen DiCianna took the first step on a life-changing journey—to become an altruistic living liver donor. Inspired by a news story about liver donation, something resonated powerfully. “From that moment on, there was never a second thought,” she shared.

On May 7, 2024, Kristen donated a portion of her liver to a 32-year-old mother whose 2-year-old daughter still needed her. “Knowing that my liver gave her the chance to keep being a mom is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Her donation was part of a paired exchange—a beautiful act of connection and altruism. Kristen’s recipient, Olga, was not a match with her own aunt, who still went on to donate to someone else in need. In November 2024, Kristen and Olga met in person for the first time. “It was truly one of the best days of my life,” Kristen said.

She credits the team that helped guide her, “The transplant team at University Hospital walked beside me every step of the way, providing education, compassion and unwavering support.”

Today, Kristen’s strength continues to shine. Since her surgery, she’s already completed two half-marathons and multiple 5Ks. “Donating didn’t slow me down; it ignited a strength and purpose in me I never knew I had. I would do it again in a heartbeat!”

Join us in celebrating Kristen and the extraordinary power of living donation. Her story is a reminder that one act of kindness can ripple into many lives.

What a day, what a story, what a future! ❤️ In 2023, Connie's life was profoundly changed forever. This year she will celebrate her second "liversary" and the incredible success of our innovative living donor liver transplant program at University Health.

Her son Doug donated a part of his liver to a stranger, setting in motion a “chain of life,” as next came Christa – an incredibly compassionate altruistic living donor and mother of three. Despite being a stranger, she donated a segment of her liver to give Connie a second chance at life. True heroes walk among us! 🎉

After years of battling liver damage and even fearing she might not survive, Connie is now thriving. "I am so very grateful and truly thankful for the life-giving gift I received," Connie shared.

Join us in celebrating Connie's incredible strength and the power of human generosity. Here's to many more years of health and happiness for all our transplant recipients! Learn more about how you can become a living liver donor: https://ow.ly/plfp50WiH7T.

After battling pulmonary fibrosis for three years, Eva's health was rapidly declining. Everything changed when she was referred to University Health Transplant Institute.

“I was in the hospital with no family or friends due to distance and work schedules while waiting for my transplant,” Eva shared. “I can say that at University Health I felt like I had a family there… doctors, nurses, techs, physical therapists and other staff members were always checking on me and asking if I needed anything and if I was OK.”

On December 7, 2023—just two days before her birthday—Eva received her life-saving lung transplant. Her recovery wasn’t easy, but her determination and the support of her care team carried her through.

Today, nearly two years later, Eva is thriving. She’s traveling, making memories with her loved ones, and cherishing every moment with her new granddaughter.

“I am truly blessed and grateful for the second chance at life that was given to me,” Eva says. “No more tears, just laughter and making new memories.”

We’re honored to walk alongside patients like Eva—offering expert care, heartfelt compassion, and lifelong support.

🔥 ’Tis the season for campfires so be careful! They may look like they’re out—but danger can still burn below. Our Dr. Chris Crane tells Jen Tobias-Struski and SA Live that ashes and coals in fire pits can stay hot long after the flames are gone. Kids don’t always see the risk, and that can lead to serious burns on little feet and hands. He shares how to keep your family safe around fire pits, grills and even those drip pans under the grill that can burn people and curious pets.

Back home? Burn risks don’t stop at the campsite:
🍳 Turn pot handles away from the edge of the stove.
⚠️ Watch out for high-placed microwaves — too often we’ve seen kids pulling down hot soup who were badly scalded.

Whether you’re under the stars or in your kitchen, stay alert and keep burn safety top of mind: https://www.ksat.com/video/sa-live/2025/06/25/common-fire-injuries-during-summer-how-to-prevent-them/.

Recently, our very own Steven Romero, Director of Organ Recovery Services and Organ Perfusion at UT San Antonio, was a key speaker in the XVIVO live webinar panel.

Steven joined leaders from three of the nation’s top transplant programs to share how new technology is helping increase organ offer acceptance rates, grow transplant volumes, support both in-house and outsourced organ call models, and improve cost efficiency and operational oversight.

“As the world of transplantation becomes more complex—with evolving technologies like organ perfusion and expanding treatment options—clear, timely communication is more critical than ever,” Steven shared during the panel. “Tools like FlowHawk empower us to streamline communication, reduce errors, and focus on what truly matters: saving lives.”

We’re honored to see Steven represent our team and contribute to such an important national conversation in transplant care.

For years, Lynda quietly battled juvenile diabetes with strength and grace—but three years ago, her health took a turn. Seizures, overwhelming fatigue, and a shocking diagnosis: kidney failure. The path ahead was uncertain and frightening, especially after witnessing a loved one’s difficult struggle with dialysis. But Lynda held on—with the support of her husband of 37 years, she never gave up hope.

Then came Lucy, a dear friend and true hero who stepped forward with a gift beyond measure—one of her kidneys. On April 2, Lynda received the transplant that saved her life.

“Without organ donors there is no story, no hope, no transplant,” Lucy shared. “I couldn't think of anything better than being able to help my dearest friend to improve her life and give her loved ones more time with her.” Her words reflect a deep belief in the power of donation and the importance of using our ability to help others.

“My kidney transplant journey has strengthened my faith in the goodness of the human spirit,” Lynda shares. “I shall be forever grateful to all involved for my lifesaving kidney transplant journey.”

With the care of the University Health Transplant Institute team and the love of family and friends, Lynda now has a second chance at life—and her story is a shining reminder of the power of living donation.

The month of June marks the observance of something vitally important: the Wear Orange campaign. It's a national effort to honor the lives tragically lost to gun violence, a stark reminder that, on average, 125 people are shot and killed each day in the U.S.

Our University Health Injury Prevention team has placed pinwheels in the garden at University Hospital as a symbol of remembrance for those lost and a beacon of hope for a future free from gun violence. 🧡

We encourage you to stand with us. Wear something orange on Fridays this month, whether it's a ribbon, earrings or an accessory in your hair. Show your support and help raise crucial awareness – let's paint our community orange in solidarity.

Today, something incredible rose on San Antonio's South Side skyline! A 200-foot crane hoisted the final, signature-covered beam onto the highest floor of University Health Palo Alto Hospital, marking a huge milestone in its construction. 🏗️ ✨

As University Health CEO Ed Banos shared, "We’re building more than just hospitals—we’re building a healthier, stronger South Side." This a vital step in providing a growing community with improved access to health care services. Leaders like Bexar County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores joined us in a centuries-old "topping out" ceremony, grounding this new facility in tradition.

Set to open in 2027, alongside University Health Vida (opening later this year!), this campus will bring approximately 1,000 new jobs for doctors, nurses and staff.

We're so excited for the transformation coming to the South Side! This is truly "growth from the ground up, for all of us." Stay updated on the construction of all our new health care facilities: universityhealth.com/about-us/expansion.

Our Story

University Transplant Center has pioneered organ transplantation for 50 years. In that time, we’ve helped thousands of patients and their families overcome end-stage liver, kidney, lung, and pancreas diseases. The greatest benefit of being a part of “our story” is the unyielding commitment and dedication our team has for people. There are so many of us, from the schedulers, finanicial coordinators, social workers, nurses, pharmacists, doctors, and even volunteers, who work together to help children and adults reach the highest quality of life possible. The things many take for granted like breathing and peeing mean the world to us. Be a part of our story by asking your doctor to refer you to UniversityTransplantCenter.com/referral.

Because of our passion for patients, we’ve evolved into the most comprehensive transplant program in South Texas. Beyond liver, kidney and lung transplantation, we provide specialized care for children and adults with cancerous and non-cancerous liver and pancreas tumors. We also have advanced endoscopists performing complicated procedures, pulmonologists specialized in rare diseases such as cystic fibrosis, and we are the second highest in volume program for living liver donation in the country.

Our strong foundation in research, education, state-of-the-art technologies, evidence-based practices, superior outcomes, and medical and surgical expertise ensures patients receive the best care. Watch this short video to see who we are - bit.ly/2AXgq2H
