UIW School of Rehabilitation Sciences

UIW School of Rehabilitation Sciences UIWSRS offers degrees in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Athletic Training. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the school operates in a 50,000 sq. ft.

At the University of the Incarnate Word School of Physical Therapy (UIW SoPT), you will find a unique hands-on and comprehensive curriculum facilitated by experienced faculty and staff dedicated to your success. custom-designed, state-of-the-art facility. The facility includes 20 small group rooms, two lecture halls, a student lounge, two large atriums, and a library. There are four learning labs

(foundational sciences, cardiovascular and pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular), a movement and gait analysis lab, and a physical rehabilitation clinic for student learning opportunities and scholarship. The Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy program uses the problem-based learning (PBL) approach, which places our students in active responsibility for learning and mastering content (student-centered learning). In a group of peers, students learn new material by exploring clinical patient scenarios. They work in small groups of 7-8 students facilitated by an experienced faculty clinician. Rather than listening to a lecture on a given topic (teacher-centered learning), students are presented with a patient case that typically integrates previously learned information with a great deal of new content (Physical Therapy Clinical Reasoning). The group must reach a consensus about the knowledge needed to manage the patient's case. They do this by developing "learning issues" or topics that represent questions about the case. On an individual basis, students then research those topics utilizing textbooks and peer-reviewed articles. Our students become skillful at searching databases, critically reviewing the evidence, and synthesizing information from various sources. The Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum consists of 104 credit hours over seven semesters, including 34 weeks of professional practice education. The DPT degree takes 2.5 years to complete and consists of five main course threads with professional practice integrated throughout the curriculum. Sports Residency:

4.5 days in Washington DC where we're inspired by the committed work of APTA volunteers (represented at the APTA Volunteer Leadership Summit) and those committed to advocacy on Capital Hill (represented by the couple hundred at APTA Capitol Hill day)!

Two of our year 2 students, Jackie Guereca & Grace Marietta, and our Program Director of the DPT program, Chad Jackson, represented UIW School of Rehabilitation Sciences and advocated for Healthcare and Healthcare education alongside other student and APTA representatives alike!

6 years of moving, 6 years of community, and 6 years of hope. 🧡

This past Saturday, UIW Health Professions joined the Parkinson’s Foundation to kick off Parkinson’s Month with our 6th Annual Moving Day! It was a powerful day of families and friends coming together to support those living with PD.

A very special shout-out to our volunteers with PD who have come to UIW and helped us in our classrooms—it was especially sweet to see you and celebrate with you today! Seeing our classroom connection come to life at Moving Day was the highlight of the morning.

A huge thank you to:

✨ Mrs. Elva Brown – Moving Day Board Chairman and the champion of our continued partnership.

✨ Dr. Pham – For hosting us on the beautiful UIW Medical School campus at Brooks City Base

✨ Our UIW PT Alumni – So good to see you back as volunteers and family members!

✨ Our IPE Dream Team – Students and faculty from Athletic Training, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, and Physical Therapy worked together to provide vital fall risk screenings (vision, balance, meds, and more) to keep our community safer and more independent.

To every volunteer who spent hours planning: you are the heart of this event. Together, we try to continue to help to make life better for our friends and family with Parkinson’s. 🥊🏃‍♂️

🚗✨ Big moves in OT education! ✨🚗

Our second-year OTD students are officially CarFit trained and ready to make a difference! 🙌

In partnership with CASA Helotes Senior Center, our students didn’t just learn—they led—by hosting a hands-on CarFit event to support older adults in driving safer and staying independent longer. 💙

Even more exciting?
🎓 They earned their CarFit Coordinator certifications
🏅 They’re now eligible for the AOTA CarFit micro-credential
🚀 And they’ll graduate OT school with this incredible, real-world experience under their belt!

This is what OT looks like in action—empowering communities, promoting safety, and preparing future practitioners to lead with purpose.
