Lines on your legs: Are they stretch marks or spider veins? What's the difference?

Stretch marks are harmless scars. Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that may signal vein disease. They can look alike, but only one affects circulation. Not sure what you're seeing? Don’t guess! Let us take a closer look. Call for your vein screening today. 210-622-8000.

Vascular disease is largely preventable through lifestyle modifications and medical management of risk factors.
Here are the key prevention strategies:

🩵Lifestyle Changes:🩵
🏃‍♂️Regular exercise - Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly. Exercise strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and helps control weight and blood pressure.
🥦Healthy diet - Follow a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit saturated fats, trans fats, sodium, and added sugars.
🚬Smoking cessation - Smoking is one of the strongest risk factors for vascular disease. Quitting smoking significantly reduces risk within months.
➿Weight management - Maintain a healthy BMI to reduce strain on the cardiovascular system.
🍸Alcohol moderation - Limit consumption to recommended guidelines (up to 1 drink daily for women, 2 for men).

👩‍⚕️Medical Risk Factor Management:❗
🩸Blood pressure control - Keep blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg through medication if needed
🥕Cholesterol management - Monitor and treat high cholesterol with statins or other medications when appropriate
🩸Diabetes control - Maintain good blood sugar control if diabetic, as diabetes significantly increases vascular disease risk
🥼Regular medical checkups - Early detection and treatment of risk factors is crucial

❗Additional Factors:❗
🧘‍♂️Stress management - Chronic stress can contribute to vascular disease through various mechanisms
💤Adequate sleep - Poor sleep quality is linked to increased cardiovascular risk
👩‍👧‍👦Family history awareness - While you can't change genetics, knowing your family history helps guide prevention efforts

The earlier these preventive measures are implemented, the more effective they are. Many people can significantly reduce their risk through consistent lifestyle changes, even if they have genetic predisposition to vascular disease.

🩵September is , a time dedicated to shining a light on the “silent” diseases of the veins and arteries that affect millions of Americans.🩵 At Medical Vein Clinic, we join this nationwide effort to educate our community about the risks of vascular disease, from varicose veins and swelling to life-threatening conditions like deep vein thrombosis, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

Many of these conditions develop quietly, without symptoms, until they become serious - yet up to 90% are preventable with lifestyle changes, regular screenings, and early treatment. This September, we encourage everyone to take action: know your risks, learn the warning signs, and schedule a vascular screening. ❗Awareness is the first step toward prevention - and prevention saves lives.

: What you Need to Know:

❤️Over 50% of American adults don’t even know that heart disease is the leading cause of death.
❤️Someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 34 seconds. That’s nearly 2,500 lives lost each day — including people in your family, your team, your community

Why It Matters And What You Can Do:

🩵Men, you can’t afford to wait. Symptoms, when they show, may already signal serious damage: stroke, amputation, heart attack. But the facts don’t lie:

🩵Health care bills are rising and Prevention saves money and lives.

🩵Awareness is your shot at early action not after the damage is done.

❗At Medical Vein Clinic, our specialists use state-of-the-art diagnostics and minimally invasive treatments so that catch-the-problem-early becomes your reality not a missed opportunity. 🗓️This September, don’t just read. Act.

September is . This month, we’re sounding the alarm: prevention starts with awareness, and awareness saves lives. Here are a few startling statistics:

⚠️ Over 697,000 Americans died from vascular disease in 2023
⚠️ More than 50% of adults don’t realize heart disease is the #1 killer
⚠️Someone in the U.S. dies from vascular disease every 34 seconds
⚠️Men are more at risk and less likely to get checked.
⚠️High blood pressure often hides in plain sight: 1 in 6 people don’t even know they have it.

We are committed to dispelling myths, educating more people, and spreading awareness because most cases are preventable with lifestyle changes and screening.

The acronym "DVT" has been in the news and in our blogs, newsletters, and articles frequently this past year with the diagnosis of a star athlete from the Spurs. In this post, Dr Hogg, breaks it down and gives you the easy to understand facts:

"Deep Vein Thrombosis, which is the formation of BLOOD CLOTS in deep veins, is a serious disease that, if not caught quickly enough, can lead to pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. The severity of the condition can often be determined by how quickly a blood clot was diagnosed. If caught early enough, and with immediate treatment, the outcome can be a positive one. If the disease is not diagnosed early, the blood clot can dislodge and travel to the lungs, which can be fatal. It’s not an exaggeration to say that timing can mean life or death.”

"Blood clots typically develop out of any combination of three factors:
Damage to blood vessels, sometimes from surgery or an injury;
a lack of movement for a long time, often long trips or excessive sitting;
genetics or other outside contribution factors like dehydration or hormone replacement.
