Great day today at the San Antonio Senior Expo at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. Despite the rain there was a hefty turnout and lots of people at the Medical Vein booth. Hot flashes are often dismissed as a normal part of menopause. What is less understood is that they are also tied to how your blood vessels respond to stress.

A hot flash is a sudden change in how your blood vessels dilate and constrict. That instability reflects changes in vascular function, not just hormone levels.

Recent research suggests that women who experience more frequent or severe hot flashes may also show early signs of vascular dysfunction.

It is another example of how the vascular system responds to hormonal shifts, and why these symptoms should not be ignored or brushed off as simply “part of aging.”

If your vascular system is.keeping you up at night, we can help 210-622-8000.

How to Select Compression Socks Beware of the Tourniquet Effect!

Compression socks only work if you wear them the right way. And most people don’t.

We see this all the time. Patients are doing the right thing… wearing compression… but small mistakes are actually making their legs feel worse.

The goal is simple: support circulation, not block it.

• Always choose gradient compression (stronger at the ankle, lighter as it moves up)
• Medical-grade is typically 20–30 mmHg
• Knee-high stockings should sit just below the knee… not over it
• If they roll or bunch, they can create a tourniquet effect
• Wrinkles = doubled pressure in the wrong place
• Rule of thumb: leave two fingers of space behind the knee when bent

If it’s too tight in the wrong spot, you’re trapping blood… not moving it.

Done right, compression helps your legs feel lighter, reduces swelling, and supports long-term vein health.

Healthy legs take you further.

"Did you Know?" With Dr. John Hogg, Founder and Medical Director of Medical Vein Clinic:

04/16/2026

Your feet will tell the story… you just have to know what to look for.

Most people ignore the early signs. A little discoloration. A little swelling. Nothing urgent. Until it is.

At Medical Vein Clinic, we start where the truth shows up first… the feet. That small patch of brown near the ankle? That’s not just skin. That’s what we call a “rust tattoo.” A sign your veins aren’t doing their job.

And swelling? There’s a difference between something we can reverse… and something that becomes part of your daily life.

• Brown discoloration near the ankle = early vein disease
• Swelling you can “pinch” = still treatable
• Tight, puffy toes = possible lymphedema
• Untreated vein disease is the leading cause of permanent leg swelling

Catch it early, and you have options. Wait too long, and it becomes something you manage… not fix.

Healthy legs take you further.™

Catch Dr. John Hogg's New Article in San Antonio Woman: "To Your Health" E-Newsletter: "How Bone & Vein Health Are Connected"

Most people don’t realize this, but bone health and vein health are closely connected.

We see it often. A patient comes in with leg discomfort. Their legs feel tired, heavy by the end of the day, maybe a little swollen. Somewhere in the conversation, they mention they were told their bone density isn’t where it should be. So they’re doing what they’ve been told, taking calcium, trying to walk more.

What catches them off guard is this: these aren’t separate issues. Your bones, your circulation, your mobility, it’s all part of the same system. When one starts to slip, the others often follow. Leg discomfort is not a normal sign of aging. In fact, it could signal a bigger problem. Give us a call and come in for a screening.
