Today was , This time of year focuses attention on the often overlooked and misunderstood condition of thrombosis. Dr. John Hogg has spoken out many times recently as the diagnosis of San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanya brought DVT to the forefront.

“Deep Vein Thrombosis, which is the formation of blood clots in deep veins, is a serious disease that, if not caught quickly enough, can lead to pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal. The severity of the condition can often be determined by how quickly a blood clot was diagnosed. If caught early enough, and with immediate treatment, the outcome can be a positive one. If the disease was not diagnosed early, the blood clot can dislodge and travel to the lungs. It’s not an exaggeration to say that timing can mean life or death.” --Dr. John Hogg

Are Hot Tubs Bad For Varicose Veins?

Think twice before you soak.
Hot tubs may feel relaxing, but for those with varicose veins, the heat can make symptoms worse. When veins dilate, blood pools and pain, swelling, and cramping can intensify.
Tip: Stick to cool or moderate temps and keep those legs moving for better circulation.

In Dr. Gianis' appeared as a guest on the In the Building Podcast. He was commenting on the state of health of Deion Sanders who has been sidelined for recurring blood clots and amputations. Dr. Gianis referenced the New York Times article that brought the critical health crisis in San Antonio fo the forefront.

Texas already has one of the highest diabetes-related amputation rates in the nation, about 52 per 100,000 hospital admissions. But here in San Antonio, the situation is even more alarming. Medical experts report that our city may have the worst diabetic foot complication rates anywhere in the world. The frequency of amputations they're performing is constant and overwhelming.

The statistics are heartbreaking. Men in our community are roughly three times more likely to lose a foot or leg to diabetes than women. Health professionals believe cultural stigmas may be preventing many Latino men from seeking the preventive care they need to protect their health.

This is preventable. Early detection, proper foot care, regular checkups, and diabetes management can save limbs and save lives. If you or someone you love is living with diabetes, please don't wait. Your health matters, your mobility matters, and your life matters.

Let's break the silence and break the stigma around men's health in our community. 💙
