San Antonio Birth Center closed its doors in June of 2021, San Antonio Birth Services continued to provide care for home birthing families through 2022.
Many of the wonderful midwives who served with SABC have opened practices of their own and continue to provide excellent care for south Texas families.

Yesterday was my last day at Birth Center Stone Oak . The plan was always for that to be temporary (like 2-3 months temporary) but now, 16 months later, I am so sad to say goodbye. What a wonderful way to close the San Antonio chapter of my life, working along side the woman I started it with.
Erika Brown is such an amazing midwife, awesome boss, and frankly one of the most hard core women on the planet. I've been in awe of her since the day I met her and seeing her thrive as a birth center owner is absolutely FANTASTIC! I am so grateful she welcomed me in and so honored to know her.

This is not goodbye, but it is thank you. Luv ya lady!

Our dear friend, Melanie Sandoval, a local birth worker, Rooted Birth doula, and devoted mother is currently facing a very challenging life event. Melanie is an incredible mother of two sweet children under 5 years old and is currently 18 weeks pregnant. After the sudden onset of headaches and vision loss, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor on 11/29/22. As Melanie is pregnant, options for diagnostic modalities and treatment are limited. We are focused on reducing her physical pain and emotional burden, while ensuring she is able to navigate the duration of her pregnancy safely. We hope to wrap Melanie and her family in prayer, love, and support. We kindly ask our friends, family, and community members to consider Melanie’s tough circumstances, especially with the holiday season right around the corner. Please consider donating to Melanie via ⭐️⭐️Venmo at last 4 3435⭐️⭐️ or GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-melaine-sandoval?fbclid=PAAaapC2nhE6Nze1WTX0bqK6QGl1MPNrL_Xu-E9_a0PdkIhfGEhEJpdzqbVOs

Any generous contributions will go directly towards childcare during her hospital stay, medical expenses incurred, and household expenses…since both she and her partner are unable to currently work. Prayers, kind words, and acts of service are also welcomed! Feel free to share your love and well wishes in the comments 💜

Of course this is shared with permission.

It is with mixed feelings that we announce that the San Antonio Birth Center and San Antonio Birth Services are no longer accepting clients.

Many of the midwives who made the San Antonio Birth Center such an amazing experience for birthing families are still providing excellent care in the community. If you are interested in exploring your options for a homebirth; please reach out to Tracy Edwards at tracythemidwife.com, Heather Randolph, Naomi Thomas and Jess Gregory at livingwaterbirth.com, Amber Gaddy at lunarmidwifery.com, and Monica Barrientes (find her on Facebook).

Alisa Voss Godfrey has records for all San Antonio Birth Center clients (babies born before July 2021) and I, Cindy Lockhart, have records for San Antonio Birth Services (July 2021- August 2022).

I am taking time to catch my breath and focus on my family. I don't yet know where I'll land or what the future holds. If you are interested, check back. I will make some updates here.

It has been a great honor to know and serve all of you. May your families flourish and as they grow, may they do so enveloped in love, peace, empowerment, and respect.

The most important thing for people to embrace when a loved one is welcoming a baby- supporting the new parents IS how you show love for the baby.

Hold the mother, not the baby.⁣

Because the baby’s being taken care of—⁣
fed, snuggled, and given all the love in the world—⁣
by not only the mother,⁣
but her partner, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and friends.⁣

But the mother,⁣
may have gaps in her mind from lack of sleep,⁣
may be mechanical in her motions as she’s healing,⁣
may feel more like a mess than a mother,⁣
may be sitting in bed, crying, feeling overwhelmed in her body and life,⁣
may be full of mom guilt because in her mind, "she's not good enough,"⁣
and she’s bleeding, wincing in pain, swollen and emotional.⁣

And the mother’s that baby's whole world and needs to be seen, so she doesn't disappear into that postpartum fog.⁣

So, hold the mother, not the baby.⁣

A mother agrees that her baby matters more.⁣
But she’s hurting, while she’s the person behind the baby,⁣
in the background, making it all happen:⁣
feeding her baby at all hours,⁣
snuggling her baby close to comfort newborn cries,⁣
and being that baby’s everything.⁣

So, it’s the mother who needs your love.⁣

And a mother will remember who held her up.⁣

So instead of “I’m coming to see the baby,”⁣
try saying, “I’m coming to see you 𝘢𝘯𝘥 meet the baby, too.”⁣

Because the mother needs to be held more.⁣

I knew June was going to be popping; 3 babies in 30 hours (still not a record 😉). I am so very grateful to the amazing midwives in this community who step up to support each other. I would not want to do this work without y'all. Thank you Tracy Edwards Midwifery, Amber Gaddy Lunar Midwifery , Holly Westbrook Journey Midwifery and Women's Health for stepping up and helping out while I played musical chairs , and Monica Barrientes with Mosaic Midwifery for coming out in the wee hours to save the day with a key. You are all amazing.
And thank you to the families who invite me in to their miracles and give me the honor of witnessing so much strength and perseverance. I remain in awe.

Bliss.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the intensity and work of birth is replaced by peace. Sometimes that peace is accompanied by immediate joy, other times the peace is a slow exhale and a minute (or two or five) of finding oneself again.

Whether the joy is immediate or creeps in slowly over time, there is no right way to feel. Just enjoy the peace; I'm afraid to say it won't last. 😉

This is one of my favorite sights at the hospital; an empty nursery! Not because no babies were born, but because of a growing and dedicated effort to keep babies in the room with their parents!

In the 8 years I have been in San Antonio, I have witnessed so much positive change in the culture of maternity and newborn care. There is an observable commitment to more positive experience; more options for moving in labor, nursing staff trained in spinning babies techniques, more patience with labor progress, fewer c-sections, and better communication with families.

I just wanted to give a shout out to Methodist Children's Hospital and their amazing staff; I see you.
