A s the American Civil War came to an end in 1865, communities across the U.S. honored fallen soldiers through local ceremonies at burial sites. On May 30, 1868, the first national ceremony of this kind took place on a day that would come to be known as Memorial Day — though at the time, it was called “Decoration Day.”
A few weeks before the ceremony, John Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans organization, issued a proclamation urging Americans to decorate Civil War soldiers’ graves with springtime’s “choicest” blooms. Logan stated that the May 30 commemoration would be “designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.” About 5,000 people gathered at Arlington National Cemetery for the first official Decoration Day observance. Along with flowers, each grave was adorned with a small American flag.
By the end of the 19th century, Decoration Day ceremonies were taking place on May 30 throughout the country. The name had started to evolve by this time, too; people began using the term “Memorial Day” instead. That moniker, however, didn’t become common until after World War II, and Congress didn’t make the name change official until 1967. A year later, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, declaring that certain federal holidays would be observed on Mondays, including Memorial Day, which was to be commemorated annually on the last Monday in May. Today, the holiday honors all Americans who have died in military service.

Lou please remind out membership that next Tuesday, the 5th of March is our fundraiser at Fish City Grill at Vance Jackson and 1604. This an all day event with 15% of the total proceeds going towards our chapter. Asking all our friends, neighbors and fellow veterans and their family and friends to support us at Fish City Grill on March 5th and remember 15% of sales on this day will go to our Chapter 14 Joseph M Earley. Senior Vice Commander Corbitt and Judge Advocate Garcia of DAV Joseph M.Earley Chapter 14 present cash to Ms Gabby of VA Services for their veterans weekly bingo for our veterans Audie Murphy VA of the VA Community Center at Audie Murphy. These veterans were excited to play bingo and thanked Comrades Corbitt and Garcia and DAC Chapter 14 for their support and friendship

Great news concerning Commander Collins surgery this morning. Prayers for a speedy recovery and healing.
Good morning. God is good. We just spoke to the doctor. He reported that everything went well. Leon is in recovery. He will be required to have periodic scans of the pituitary gland. The tumor was not cancerous.

Dear Mr. Corbitt,

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 6362, the Protecting Benefits for Disabled Veterans Act. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you may know, H.R. 6362 was introduced on November 9, 2023 by Rep. Maxine Waters. The bill would establish the authority of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to assign a disability rating of " total" to a veteran by reason of un-employability.

As the Representative of Military City, USA, I will continue to ensure that my work in Congress supports the 22 million veterans across the country, including the 1.7 million in Texas, and safeguards the benefits they deserve. On, November 9, 2023, H.R. 6362 was referred to the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, where it is currently pending action. Should the bill come to the House floor for a vote, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind.
