When should you use hot or cold therapy?
Itβs a frequently asked question here at Dr Golab's Chiropractic & Massage.
Cold therapy is best for acute injuries, such as sprains, strains, or bruises, and should be applied as soon as possible after the injury occurs. Cold therapy helps reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling by constricting blood vessels and slowing down the metabolic rate of cells.
On the other hand, heat therapy is best for chronic conditions, such as arthritis or muscle spasms, and should be applied for 20-30 minutes at a time. Heat therapy helps increase blood flow, relax muscles, and promote healing.
Another crucial step is to alternate between hot and cold therapy correctly. The general rule of thumb is to apply cold therapy for 20 minutes at a time, followed by a 20-minute break, then apply heat therapy for 20 minutes at a time, followed by another 20-minute break, and repeat as necessary. It's important to note that patients should never apply heat or cold therapy directly to the skin and should always use a towel or other protective layer.
