Here at Blackbird_counseling, we provide therapy from a fat liberation lens. What does this mean? We talk about bodies and weight from a neutral perspective, offer clients opportunities to process the ways they have been hurt by anti-fat biases, recognize the ways anti-fat biases are centered in white supremacy, and prioritize a collaborative approach to dismantling the harmful value systems that try to dictate which bodies deserve respect and which don’t.
Anti-fat biases and discrimination are everywhere; it’s important that we provide clients a respite from the harm done by oppressive systems. Good news, though: you don’t need to be a therapist, or fat, to practice fat liberation. As puts it, “although it is designed to center the needs of fat people who have been marginalized from society, fat liberation is the work of ALL people.”
