☀️ UV Safety Awareness Month continues — today we’re raising awareness about Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).

While SCC is not usually life-threatening, if left untreated, it can spread and lead to serious complications. What causes it? Most SCCs are caused by too much UV exposure — especially from sunlight and tanning beds.

What to look for:
• A firm bump (nodule) on the skin
• A flat sore with a scaly crust
• A new sore that may become open
• A raised area on an old sore or scar

SCC can develop anywhere on the skin. If you notice any unusual or persistent changes, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider. Early action makes all the difference!

☀️ UV Safety Awareness Month continues as we spotlight different types of skin cancer — starting with Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC).

Basal cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer and is mostly caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays. BCC typically develops on sun-exposed areas of the body — especially the face, ears, and neck.

What to look for:
• A skin-colored or pink bump
• A shiny, brown, or black bump
• A bump with a rolled or raised border
• A sore that doesn’t heal

If you notice any new or changing spots on your skin, consult your healthcare provider. Early detection is key.

☀️ UV Safety Awareness Month continues — and today, we’re shining a light on melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

Melanoma is most often caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, and alarmingly, rates are rising among people under 40.

Early detection is key. Be on the lookout for:
• Changes in existing moles
• New or unusual pigmented growths

Remember the ABCDE rule when checking your skin:
A – Asymmetry
B – Border (irregular or blurred)
C – Color (varied shades)
D – Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser)
E – Evolving (changes over time)

Check your skin regularly and talk to your doctor if you notice anything unusual. Awareness can save lives!

Today, July 16th, 2024, is celebrated as Glioblastoma Awareness Day.

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive type of brain tumor. We are unclear on what causes glioblastoma, but know it is non-genetic and rapidly forming.

Current treatment for glioblastoma includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, however, these treatments are ineffective for long-term survival.

Common symptoms of glioblastoma include headaches, loss of appetite, loss of balance or trouble walking, personality and behavior changes, and mood swings.

Self-Care Month is celebrated each year from June 24 (6/24) to July 24 (7/24) — a symbolic reminder that self-care should be practiced 24/7!

There are two parts to self-care:
✨ Self-care actions – habits and routines that help us live healthier lives, like staying active, eating well, getting enough sleep, and managing stress.
💊 Self-care interventions – evidence-based tools (like medications or therapies) that support our health and well-being.

By embracing self-care, we become active participants in our own healthcare — empowering ourselves to care for both our bodies and minds.

Make yourself a priority this month and every month. You deserve it!

Today, July 13th, is recognized as Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Awareness Day!

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors are a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma that originate in the gastrointestinal tract's cells, often the stomach or the small intestine. These tumors are caused by genetic mutations in cells that help regulate cell growth, leading to uncontrolled growth and division of tumor cells. Common signs and symptoms of GIST include abdominal pain or discomfort, gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea/vomiting, and the constant feeling of fullness.

☀️ July is UV Safety Awareness Month! ☀️

As temperatures rise and summer fun moves outdoors, it’s more important than ever to practice safe sun habits.

Many skin cancers are linked to UV exposure — whether from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds.

🚫 Avoid tanning beds — they expose your skin to dangerously high levels of UV radiation.
⚠️ Be cautious when laying out in the sun just to tan — intentional sun exposure increases your risk of skin damage and cancer.

Instead, protect your skin by using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible. Your skin is worth it!

🎗️ July is Bone Cancer and Sarcoma Awareness Month 🎗️

Sarcomas are rare cancers that form in the bones or soft tissues of the body. While bone and joint cancers are more commonly diagnosed in teenagers, soft tissue sarcomas tend to affect adults aged 55 and older.

Common symptoms may include:
▪️ Persistent pain, especially in the joints
▪️ Swelling or a noticeable lump
▪️ Pain that worsens over time

Early detection is key. If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms, talk to your doctor. Let’s spread awareness and support those affected by these rare cancers.

During UV Safety Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to brush up on how to choose the right sunscreen!

Did you know it’s recommended to wear sunscreen every day, even when you're not directly in the sun?
UV rays can still reach you through clouds and windows.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for:
✔️ Broad-spectrum protection (protects against both UVA & UVB rays)
✔️ SPF 30 or higher
✔️ Water resistance
✔️ Non-comedogenic (great for sensitive or acne-prone skin)

Protecting your skin daily can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. Make sun safety a habit!

Our Story

At the START Center for Cancer Care, our mission is to provide the highest-quality care for people with cancer, and help accelerate the development of new treatments in order to improve patients’ quality of life and give them real hope against cancer. In pursuit of this mission, the START Center brings world-class care to South Texas, with multiple convenient locations in San Antonio.

Comprised of a large team of caring, dedicated cancer doctors, the START Center combines excellent people, state-of-the-art capabilities and the most advanced treatments available. We bring together multiple cancer-care specialties and modalities — surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, integrative therapies, genetic testing of tumors — for thorough and efficient care. In addition, we make an uncommon commitment to advancing the standard of cancer care through our leadership role in cancer research.

We have one of the world’s largest and most active Phase I clinical trial programs, giving the START Center access to the most advanced anticancer drugs — access not available at many of the biggest regional cancer institutions. Over the years, our researchers have helped bring 19 promising anticancer drugs to market. Today, our participation in Phase I drug trials allows us to offer new alternatives — and new hope — in the fight against cancer. We also serve the interests of advancing cancer care with our tumor bank, which gives other researchers access to tissue samples vital to discovering and testing new anticancer compounds.

At the START Center for Cancer Care, we are cancer doctors because we are dedicated to improving the lives of others. For our physicians and our entire team, compassion is at the center of all we do. We are here to serve your best interests or those of your loved one. We care for you person-to-person, on an individual level. This begins with genetic tumor testing to personalize your treatments, but it extends to the warmth, caring, support, assistance and level of service we provide. We work with you, care for you, educate you and learn from you, because part of our commitment to providing top-quality cancer care is to also provide the kindness, respect and compassion you deserve.
