Presentation title: A Framework for Integrating Neuroscience into Clinical Practice

Presented by Dr. Rowland Folensbee, PhD

About this virtual workshop:

This three-hour presentation provides a framework within which psychologists’ personal stores of knowledge regarding neuroscience can be integrated and then applied to understanding and implementing psychotherapy and assessment processes. The framework is comprised of six primary elements:

1. The neuropsychological model for understanding input-process-out of cognitive and emotional experience;

2. Neural networks;

3. Implicit and explicit memory;

4.Affect;

5. Anxiety;

6. Human development.

Core, overarching brain processes within each element are explained and the clinical relevance of each process for understanding clients’ behavioral and psychological manifestations is delineated. Findings from basic research, clinical outcome studies, and observations of individual therapy cases are incorporated into the presentation. Participants are helped to identify how their clients’ behaviors and verbalizations can facilitate assessment of underlying neuropsychological processes. At the same time, understanding their clients’ underlying neuropsychological processes in an integrated way can be used to support assessments and interventions undertaken within any psychotherapeutic model. Throughout the presentation, discussion breaks will be provided to guide participants in applying each element of the framework to their interventions with their clients. The initial presentation of the framework is kept simple enough that psychology students early in training can grasp and apply the concepts. However, based on the complexity of the overall framework, advanced clinicians can benefit from understanding they can glean from integrating neuroscience into already well-developed conceptions of treatment.

Cost for this workshop (early registration discount!):

Student Members $30
Members $60
Non-Members $80

Early registration discount will end on September 12, 2025, and after that $15 will be added to each price.

Our hearts are heavy with grief and care for our Hill Country communities.

We know many in our extended communities have been impacted by the flooding throughout Central Texas. Our hearts are with you and with all those affected. Some areas have considerable mental health support being coordinated while others have fewer community members or organizational resources who can provide immediate or longer term care.

If you are able or willing to provide support to those impacted by the Central Texas Flooding, please sign up here and we will be getting this information coordinated with other local area societies and through the people providing direct resources and support to those directly impacted by the flooding: https://forms.gle/XKCmsoZeyykoWm9y6

We know there are a couple of lists going around, including one by the Hill Country Counselors Association which has an extensive list of providers, so please don't feel you need to duplicate responses unless you want to. We have coordination with them as well.

There have been two specific asks which, if you can assist directly or have people or resources you can recommend to assist, please let us know by emailing Dr. Amy Gorniak amy.nicole.gorniak@gmail.com who is the Member at Large-General for BCPA Executive Committee this year and is connected with several local organizations with boots on the ground doing flood support. These two needs are:

1) Hill Country Counseling Association will be setting up groups with first responders in Kerrville and the surrounding areas and is seeking people with CISM/CISD and Psychological First Aid training who would be willing to co-facilitate groups for first responders over the coming weeks/months.

2) Both flood victims and responders, including many volunteers in areas where there hasn't been much outside organizational response as yet, are in need of crisis support check ins and community based groups or circles for making space to be with our process grief, distress, etc. and aces their own capacity and their community supports. Many areas don't have stable wi-fi or other internet so in person facilitation would be most effective. Hunt, Leander/Sandy Creek, and potentially other areas would benefit from this support. If you would be interested in this kind of work, possibly over time rather than one and done, please reach out (and, also, all help is useful so if you might be able to help once, that's good, too!)

Also, if anyone knows psychiatric providers (Psychiatrists, PNPs, etc) who might be able or willing to donate time to help people get access to prescriptions they've lost, please feel free to forward them this information. They can reach out to Dr. Gorniak or if anyone knows of a group coordinating this already, that would be beyond helpful to have information for.

Thank you all for all you do.

Best,
BCPA Executive Committee

True or False? What you eat does not affect how you feel.

False. Proper nutrition is incredibly important for mental health. If you eat well, you help get proper nutrients to your brain and that helps you get into a positive state of mental health.

True or False? If you have a mental illness, you will feel mad, sad or worried all the time.

False. People diagnosed with a mental illness may not have to battle their illness every day. Often, if they take care of their mental health, their mental illness will not affect their day at all. Some days their illness takes over and they’ll need to battle. Just like someone without a mental illness, every day is different.
