The Voice Center bids farewell to our Laryngology
Fellow, Dr. Pat McGarey. He has accepted a faculty position at University of Virginia and will be starting his academic career very soon. Dr. McGarey will be sorely missed by the entire staff here, and especially all the patients he has taken such great care of. He is a fantastic physician in every way and we look forward to following his career in the coming years. Cheers to Dr. McGarey and his wonderful family!

UT Voice Center gets a shout out in Rolling Stone Magazine! Wade Bowen's new documentary "Inconsistent Chaos" details Bowen's journey through vocal struggles and his successful return to the stage after vocal cord surgery, as he also dealt with the tragic loss of his stage manager and nephew Chase Cavender. Dr. Blake Simpson, Speech Pathologist Rachelle Speer and John Nix, Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at UTSA were all instrumental in his vocal recovery.

How cool is this? Red blood cells flowing through blood vessels in the larynx.
We've recently discussed vocal cord hemorrhage and its potential impact on the singing voice over time (good news, the vocal cords recover very well with voice rest!). The vessels of the vocal cords are very small and delicate. This fascinating video is a close up of red blood cells tumbling through small blood vessels in the false vocal cord, a structure just above the "true" vocal cords. This video was taken in the operating room where high power magnification allows precise surgery of the vocal cords.

Dr. Simpson was the keynote speaker for this year's Laryngology Society of Australasia Conference in Adelaide, Australia. The topic was "Innovations in Laryngology" and Dr. Simpson discussed state of the art endoscopic and office based management of airway disorders. It was a great conference and we had a chance to catch up with some of our talented colleagues in Australia and New Zealand!
