Rethinking Clinical Trials in the Age of AI and AGI

Prospective interventional studies are the foundation of evidence-based medicine. However, this foundation is being questioned due to the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the conceptual emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

This insightful manuscript explores whether AI and AGI can augment or replace traditional clinical trials. It examines AI's current capabilities in trial design, decision support, and retrospective analysis while highlighting the ethical, methodological, and regulatory limits of depending solely on machines. AGI may promise more, but it also poses risks: bias, lack of transparency, and unclear validation pathways.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists at UTSA’s Honey Pathway Program

Earlier today, I had the distinct pleasure of attending a student breakfast hosted by the Honey Pathway Program at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA)—a transformative initiative committed to nurturing talent, fostering academic confidence, and expanding representation in STEM fields. This visit was made possible through the kind invitation of Dr. Ferhat Ozturk, Director, Honey Pathway Program whose commitment to student development and mentorship is truly commendable.

As I stood before a room filled with driven, inquisitive, and passionate students—each wearing the Honey Pathway colors with pride—I couldn’t help but feel hopeful about the future of science and healthcare. This program is more than just a pathway; it is a launchpad for diverse and talented students who may not have had traditional access to research experiences or mentorship in the sciences.

During my remarks, I introduced them to several initiatives that may serve as platforms for their growth and global engagement:

I extended a warm invitation to the students to submit their original work, reviews, or reflections—because their voices matter, and the world needs their perspectives.

A humanitarian initiative rooted in the belief that education and scientific equity are foundational to better healthcare systems. The Foundation supports emerging scholars and provides platforms for service, leadership, and cross-border collaboration.

I was struck not only by the students’ academic curiosity, but by their thoughtful questions and sincere desire to make a difference. These are the future clinicians, researchers, and health equity advocates our world so urgently needs. The event was a reminder that mentorship, opportunity, and belief in young talent can be transformative. The Honey Pathway Program at UTSA is doing precisely that—building bridges to excellence and inclusion in science.

To the students I met that morning...keep exploring. Keep questioning. Keep believing in your capacity to lead. I look forward to reading your future publications in INNOVAPATH and to seeing the impact you will create in the world of science and medicine.
