Get to know Scarlett of Mahalia Vedic Wellness:
Drawing inspiration from my lineage of midwives and birth workers, I chose the name "Mahalia" for my company, which descends from my great-great-great-grandmother who was the first midwife in my family. Mahalia happens to be my own middle name as well.
Home birth has always been a normal part of life for me, I thought it was what everyone did. I was lucky enough to watch my two younger siblings be born at home, after having been born at home myself.
Cooking is one of my favorite forms of self-expression and one of the primary ways I express my love and respect for those around me. I have many fond memories of being my father’s sous chef growing up. My appreciation for fine food was enhanced over the several years I spent working for one of the best chefs in the United States. I cook for and teach my clients cooking techniques and recipes from global cuisines. My culinary skills stretch far beyond classical Ayurvedic cooking to keep meals exciting.
I began learning about nutrition and natural health at age 16, telling everyone I was going to be a holistic nutritionist before I knew what that meant. The catalyst for me was learning about the terrible things going on in big agriculture and big pharma... It just didn’t make sense to me that we should be so heavily dependent on those systems.
My first experience with alternative healing was acupuncture, which I describe as profound and euphoric. My experience led me to fall in love with Traditional Chinese Medicine, which became a big part of my life for years. Through yoga I found Ayurveda, which had many similarities to TCM, but resonated with me on an even deeper level. Ayurveda just made sense. It too is a profound, complex system, but gentle, inclusive, and practical. The principles of Ayurveda can easily be used to enhance life for all beings!
I have extensive training in Nadi Vigyan, or classical pulse assessment, as seen in the picture on this post. This special Ayurvedic technique lets me see into my client's psychophysiology to better understand the imbalances they are experiencing and guide them back to their natural state before bigger problems arise.
