Training all the time does not always equal better. I see many athletes who push it very young start having injuries in the early teens and then many cases burn out by the time they’re between 15 and 17. It’s better to think, long-term than trying to be the best at a young age. Also just because athletes don’t want to train all the time doesn’t mean they don’t love the sport. Its normal for kids to want to have a balance with a variety activities and play with their friends. Many times they’re not super motivated until puberty. Listen to your kids, and if they have a passion, it will show up usually by their teens. Be careful not to push too hard or they will be oppositional and not have fun anymore.

Today’s athletes compete under a global spotlight—every move filmed, every mistake replayed. The fix isn’t more reps; it’s better mental reps.

What I’ve noticed in my over 20 years experience workingwith athletes is that athletes who wait longer to get sports psychology help in their career tend to have poorer outcomes. The reason is because things have been ingrained in them the perfectionistic and ego orientation that winning comes first leading to a lot more perfectionism and performance anxiety especially during critical moments of competition and competition in general. Too much pressure to win is a lot hard harder to change if it’s ingrained. Athletes and parents need to get this help at a younger age to see better results.

In tennis and volleyball. It’s very important to keep working on great technique. However., most importanty its to “find a way” to win which is about strategy and mental toughness. If athletes are overthinking about technique and too emotional they will miss important strategies, “intell”, and miss seeing the opponents weaknesses.
